But most of Wingate’s students are white, rich, and really smart. “Big Mike” as he was called, came from Memphis’ projects; he has no real home. He carries his extra clothes with him, mostly just a spare shirt, in a plastic bag, and he washed all his clothes in the sink at the local laundromat. He would’ve disappeared that cold November night if he could have as he walked, shivering, along the side of the road. But instead, he was spotted by Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family, and before Michael knew it, all 300-plus pounds of him was ushered into the backseat and whisked away to the Tuohy mansion. As the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield appears to attribute his social condition to circumstances beyond his control. Critics give praise to the character of Holden Caulfield as a non-conformist rebel that is unwilling to compromise in the face of the harsh realities of society. However, this view does not seem to hold true to the circumstances taking place. Holden's detachment from his life is almost voyeuristic in nature, and he is unwilling to take responsibility for his actions, or lack there of, on any meaningful level. Holden Caulfield is a disaffected youth whose cowardice, sexual impotency, and inability to reconcile the perceived perversions of society with his own childish, idealistic morals lead to his eventual mental break-down. Little sympathy can be had for Holden when the only active participation his takes in his own life is his own self-destruction.…
The term “Machiavellian” was adopted in the sixteenth century and was often used to introduce political tracts that offered more than just reasons of state. Today we use Machiavellian to describe a person who deceives and manipulates others for a personal good, like Iago in Othello. The actions that are taken by Iago are the ones that affect the results like in Machiavelli’s know book of the The_ Prince_, where the prince retains control of his realm. He focuses primary on the assumption that a prince has an easier task since the people are the ones that get accustom to him. He is the one that must stabilize his power and build a structure that will be endured among the others. In order to do this it requires him to be above public reproach and privately do immortal things in order to achieve his goals. A Machiavellian figure is mainly successful by obtaining and maintaining power. Iago in all his cruel actions was swift, effective and short-lived. As Machiavelli describes that good can come from the evil action, but only if it is seen from the right view point. Iago in Othello is often referred to a Machiavellian villain since he has every thing that is required to be one. A Machiavellian villain has to be intelligent in working throughout his mastered plan, like Iago did from the beginning by playing with people’s minds. It also requires to be boastful as in revealing plans in soliloquies. A Machiavellian villain must also have a great judge of character and use the weakness and strengths of the victims to achieve his goal. He must also know how to adjust resources to his plan and have other strategies as agents. The main principle of a Machiavellian villain believes that “the end justifies the means”. He must know when to isolate the evil and appear good among other characters. The fact that Iago plays the Machiavellian villain in Othello practically tells us that he is two faced character. He is a villain that learns from the outside experiences and doesn’t…

There have been may attempts to implement a character education program at Hollister High School. After collaborating with the members of the Character Education focus team and veteran members of the high school staff, there was a general consensus that the programs of the past questioned the student’s intelligence in terms of the character lessons being taught. The lessons did not make the students think. The lessons were designed for students a lot younger than high school aged young adults. The team had to develop program that would get student students to think about how their decisions define who they are as people and how these better decisions will help each student become the best version of themselves. The program implemented needed to be more than a character word of the month.…
