Taylor Swift and Feminism
Here’s something that has been bugging me a bit recently, the idea that Taylor Swift is anti-feminist or that her songs present femininity in a negative light and she’s doing more harm than good.

It’s usually what you hear before they say that she doesn’t write her own music (first problem with that, she does actually write her own songs, secondly a lot of others don’t) and that she dates a lot of guys (because attempts at actual relationships are somehow worse than musicians that have gone on record to say they’ve slept with hundreds of girls).

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the goal of feminism to be empowered to do whatever you want? To establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment? To control your own life and make it into a success in a male dominated society?

Taylor Swift isn’t hurting feminism, the only thing being detrimental to feminism is your own backwards ass interpretation of feminism.

I’d you hadn’t notice I have miserable luck with relationships. Actually luck isn’t Even a factor, they’ve all been miserable failures.

So what’s got me in a huff now? See I met this girl at a friends birthday party and we hit it off beautifully. Others thought we were really cut together and we just clicked. For probably the first time I actually experienced someone who was legitimately interested in me even if it was just a tiny sliver of interest. So she asked my friend about me and suddenly she has no interest in me. Why? Because I’m only 22.

What the fuck.

That has to be the stupidest reason I’ve encountered. What the bloody hell does my age have to do with anything? There is absolutely no reason age should make any difference unless its something dramatic like I was still in high school. Age is of no importance or an indication of anything, anyone can grow old all you have to do is live long enough. I was born at a very early age are you going to hold that against me? Jokes aside, its backward ass thinking like

Feminism means different things to different women. To women with a taste for politics and reform it means the right to vote and hold office. To women who are physically strong and adventuresome it means freedom to enter all kinds of athletic contests and games. To many women it means social and sex freedom. Yet it is agreed that birth control is an elementary essential in all aspects of feminism. Women wanted control over their own bodies. They were never able to take control in anything. Men made all the choices for their wives and father did for his daughters. They were often looked down upon…

Being feminist means to achieve the goal of women empowerment and that is to control our own lives not just as women but also as an individual no matter what the society and other people think. In the article My Hips, My Caderas by Alisa Valdes, the author feels empowered as a woman when she refused to dance with men who she says are only drawn by her body as she says, “they ask me to dance, and I often say “no” because I can.”…

In “Off Brand: The Limits of Celebrity Feminism,” Andi Zeisler uses two recent celebrity feminist-movement incidents as a starting point for her argument that celebrity feminism is holding back and depoliticizing feminism. One incident involves Kim Kardashian announcing at a conference as a keynote speaker that she holds feminist beliefs but she does not like labels therefore she does not identify as a feminist. The second incident revolves around the comedian Amy Schumer’s employment of a friend of hers as a writer for her show, Kurt Metzger, who has exhibited aggressive behavior toward women and feminists and rather vocally holds severely anti-feminist beliefs. Zeisler puts forth that this has been shown time and time again with the celebrities…

What is the correct meaning of the powerful word “feminist?” Today, feminism is usually referred to as a woman who supports her rights. Hawthorne represents feminism through his character Hester, in “The Scarlet Letter” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Although people view women as weak, Hester was a strong female character that stood up for herself by raising her daughter alone, protecting her secret lover, and even experiencing the pain of wearing the shameful letter “A.” Usually, men view women as weak by saying that they are not able to do certain things that men can, which is irrelevant. Hester raised her daughter Pearl all on her own without any help. even though raising a child on your own is very challenging at times. While constantly…

I feel this is an appropriate choice for Swift’s video because she often dons and flaunts the feminist label as many current influential woman in celebrity culture are doing; many however continue to perpetuate a stereotype of the traditional subordination of women through overt sexuality. Swift is blazing a new trail where she connects and empowers other women instead of creating a sexual persona for the male gaze. She also tackles the double standards of woman in today’s music industry being melodramatic if writing about anything sentimental or non-sexual; in a Rolling Stone’s interview, she stated, "A man writing about his feelings from a vulnerable place is brave; a woman writing about her feelings from a vulnerable place is oversharing…

According to the dictionary, feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. This means that what a feminist wants is not a matriarchal society where men are oppressed by domineering women, but equality for women. This doctrine has existed for many years, and it first became prominent during the late eighteenth century. However, if we are to explore how feminism affects society today, we must focus on its more recent history. Specifically, the “second wave” of feminism which arose during the 1950s and 1960s. This new feminist movement arose a few years after the publication of The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. This book struck a nerve with the American housewife, and caused many to question if all a woman was capable of doing was merely cooking, cleaning, and pleasing her husband. In 1966 Friedan and others formed an activist group named the National Organization for Women, or NOW. This group demanded equal pay for equal work and enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination in employment due to race and/or gender. As the feminist movement progressed, more and more women began to stand up for their rights, until in 1980, when women comprised the majority of undergraduates. But enough with history, how does feminism exist in our society today? First we must take a look at how feminism is perceived. According to…

The first aim of feminism I will discuss is ending sexism. Sexism is the unfair treatment of others due to their gender. Sexism in America has been an ongoing epidemic for years. What most of us may not know is that just like men, women can be sexist. bell hooks states “females and males, have been socialized from birth to accept sexist thought and action as a consequence, females can be just as sexist as men” (hooks 2000:viii-ix). We as Americans often times dismiss sexism as a problem, but it is a problem in our society…

The Webster's New Explorer Dictionary defines feminism as an organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests (“Feminism”). Over the past 200 years, women have fought for these rights in an effort to receive equal pay, voting rights, and marriage equality; however, these are only some of the things that feminists have fought for. In addition, average women are not the only ones fighting for their rights. Along with them are celebrities, human activists, political, and historical figures that also strive to see a day where a woman's rights are equal to the typical white man's rights. As Susan B. Anthony, a woman’s rights activist once said, “The day may be approaching when the whole world will recognize woman as the equal of man”.…

In recent events, the word feminism has come up and a new debate has begun to circle around what it means, and how it should be applied to our society today. From statements made by celebrities, as a theme in a popular Beyonce song, and exposed emails from within the film industry, feminism is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in the form of exposure to a new generation. While most people would agree that any discussion about feminism is good, there is also a circulation of misguided or false ideas of what feminism actually is. Additionally, there have been very public instances that prove that we still have some progress to make in the form of equality feminism aims to bring to various groups of people. Feminist Magazine defines feminism as the movement that “strives to end the discrimination, exploitation, and oppression of people due to their gender, sexual orientation, race, class, and other differences and supports people in being free to determine their own lives for themselves.”…

In the 1800s, women did not have the same rights that they do now. Because of this, feminists fought for women’s rights. Feminism is defined as the ideology and movements that have the goal of creating equality between men and women. Feminist movements in the United States have given women many more rights than they previously had. Some of these rights include the right to vote and reproductive rights (Feminism, 2017).…

Even some of the most famous artists, such as The Beatles, have hit songs that are in fact very offensive and degrading to women. For example, the song “Run For Your Life” includes lyrics such as “well I'd rather see you dead, little girl/ than to be with another man.” These lyrics speak for themselves; the singer would rather see his girlfriend dead than to have her be with someone else. He clearly thinks that he owns her, and she is his property. This is not an uncommon theme in songs, and sadly in reality as well. There are many instances…
