Technology: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Essay Example
Technology:
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Writer's Memo: For my research paper, I would really like to discuss how modern technology is taking away our intelligence. I read a statistic the other day that read, 19% of child between the ages of two and four can operate an Iphone application, but only 9% can tie their shoes. This quote startled me and caused me to realize that we, as humans, are slowly loosing are ability to do simple tasks such as learning to tie our shoes. There is so much advanced technology out there now, that there is little we have to do for ourselves now. The Ipad is the new pen and paper. Laptops and computers spell out words for us. Even in all the hoopla, it gets bad. People have bags under their eyes from staring at screens. Arthritis is forming in the hands of excessive texters, young and old. I don't want to just rattle off reasons of why technology is bad. There are some positives as well. So, I will incorporate how technology is good while expressing the reasons why it is bad as well. I want people to realize how they are being affected by technology because, if they do not see it now, then it will only be worse for their children. Their children will eventually be sucked into the technology trap as well. I think that a good title for my paper is: Technology: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I think the title is a good way to present my topic that is respectful, but informative. The object is to inform. It is not to get people to stop buying new technology. I hope to open the eyes of those who think that technology is the best thing for us. My thesis statement will be something along the lines of: Today's technology is not only better than it was before, it is also worse.

Outline:

Technology has worsened our world by being a springboard for many people today in the corporate world all the way to the schools. It has made us all become dependent and use computers and the internet for almost everything. Technology is contrary to nature because of the steel that is being mined from the earth and the metals that are dug from the ground. Technology should not be taken completely but limited to the ones who abuse it. People who are in the corporate world should be the ones with legal access to the technology due to their nature of work. Our world has become dependent on technology to an unnatural level; therefore we should limit access to technology and use what we have.…

Technology robs society of its humanity and thinking abilities.Nicholas Carr wrote “ “ intellectual technologies”-the tools that extend our mental rather than physical capacities- we inevitably begin to take on the qualities of those technologies.”(Carr 59) . In other words technology helps abandon independent intellect only to mimic the traits of the technology such as decoding and encrypting information, lacking contemplation and limits. In novel Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and the article Is Google Making Us Stupid by Nicholas Carr both pieces of literature explore the negative effects technology has on human beings.…

The technology that surrounds us is changing the way we think. Humans have been influenced by our technology since the dawn of civilization. Now, it is the Information age that has created a new kind of human intelligence, a change in our thinking worthy of great enthusiasm and intense scrutiny. It seems like the majority of people believe the Internet and new media has diminished our memory, our creativity, and our intelligence. There is even research into the neurological effects of using Google. But every new innovation, from the written word to the telegraph, has triggered the very same fears. We fear that life will never be the same, that our culture is fading, and our intelligence eroding. But just as we did in the past, we have adapted. We are learning to use our new technology in unpredictable ways. It is through the use of modern technology that we now learn more and retain it longer, and we write and think…

For many years technology has been consuming our daily lives, to the point where it has taken over our minds and actions. Nowadays people pay more attention to their phones, computers, etc., rather than everything else around them, therefore becoming less alert and more prone to engaging in activities without thinking of the consequences. In the past, technology has put people out of jobs. The Industrial Revolution is one of the best examples, which took place in the 1800 's that helps support my idea. This was a time in America when people started to find out the advantages of work done by machines. The machines were able to do the work up to 10 times faster than the manual laborer. Along with this, the machines became a more reliable source of work. They were always there and never complained, simply because they were unable to complain. With the problems of people being unreliable and not wanting to do work obsolete people were able to see how much money mass productions brought in to their companies.…

This technology revolution sparked a debate on children’s use of technology. Children are constantly using iPads, iPhones, tablets, and other computerized devices. By over exposing children to technology, they are being robbed of the mental stimulation that comes from doing real, non computerized, activities. It has gotten to the point where one can see a two-year-old navigate an iPhone with ease but struggle to speak. Sixty-nine percent of children aged two to five can use a computer mouse, but only eleven percent can tie their own shoelaces (Generation Tech More Kids Can Play Computer Games than Ride a Bike). Also, children are at an all time low in the creativity department because of the lack of chances to practice their creativeness. The social interactions worsen due to the fact that children would rather communicate over the internet and via text message than speak face to face. In order to be sure that children get the proper building blocks for their future education, we must limit children’s use to technology.…
