Teens and Society Essay Example
Teenagers And Society

“Teenagers know nothing and do not help society in the least bit possible.” This is some peoples’ opinion on teenagers, but not all teenagers are like this. A lot of teenagers do help out in society and help to make it better. Some volunteer, work, etc, etc. Not all teenagers are bad! Everyone wants a good society to live in and enjoy.

Firstly, there would not be many fast food restaurants or clothing stores available if it weren’t for teenagers because a lot of the time they are the ones who work there. You don’t find many people in their 40’s working at stores like “garage” or “subway”. Teenagers work in lots of clothing stores and fast food restaurants, which allows those stores to stay open. So, in this way, teenagers help the economy. By working at a younger age (14-18), allows teens to get good work experience, so that they can be a better worker when they are older.

Secondly, a lot of teenagers also volunteer. They volunteer at hospitals, libraries, pet stores, and lot’s of other places. At the hospital, they can give a hand with simple tasks that must be done, or help make a patient smile. Some libraries have teenagers read to younger children, or teach them how to read. They may also have teens put away books, or help check them out. At pet stores, they will get teens to help feed the animals, or clean the cages. Some teens volunteer to beautify the city by washing graffiti off the walls of buildings, or even plant trees to promote the environment. Best of all, those are just some of the places they can volunteer. There are many, many more places. You just have to ask around.

Thirdly, school programs like “Leadership” at St. Francis are good examples of teens contributing to society. In these school or outside of school programs, teens learn how to build good leadership skills. They learn how to make things happen, and how to make lives better. In St. Francis’s leadership class, students learn to make the school a safe

It's not common to see teens in the work field nowadays. Many blame the job market for this, as they claim: "They don't produce jobs for students anymore". However, in the passage "WHY MORE TEENAGERS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS NEED TO WORK WHILE IN SCHOOL" by Jeffrey J. Selingo, he attempts to convince readers why college and high school students should be working during the school year. Jeffrey uses a handful of powerful claims backed up by appealing evidence to shut down the stereotypical claim that the job market is to blame for why these students don't have correct work ethics. Students would rather pay for loans than take a job for a general and truthful claim.…

Teenagers would have to get a job at a young age to support their family. “I was making 75 to 100 dollars a week in 40 hours.” No one else at a young age was trying to find a job to help out their families. It was hard enough for the teen’s parents to lose their jobs and their family struggles. The families couldn’t afford good food for their kids or afford new clothes.…

In the article, Working at McDonalds, Sociologist, Amitai Etzioni speaks about how teenagers don’t benefit as much from a McDonalds job. Etzioni start off by saying there are over two-thirds of high school students who works at McDonald, and many believe fast food is a good first step in the right direction. Fast food restaurants, pay more than an average teenagers job, but there are downfalls to it. Etzioni has a few examples, to prove his claim. He believes there are no entrepreneurship, self-discipline, self-supervision and self-scheduling, mainly because a lot of teen jobs are highly structured, or as Etzioni states, “highly routinized.” When working these types of jobs, there are routines such as, changing…

Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…

After reading this essay by Amitai Etzioni, I could see why he is promoting teenagers to pay more attention to their academics and education rather working at fast food restaurants like McDonalds. He provides many studies done to prove his thesis clearly. One of the few studies is a 1984 study by Ivan Charper and Bryan Shore Fraser which says that teenagers do not pay attention to what skills they develop because they only care about finishing their working hours and earning money. Another study by A. V. Harrell and P. W. Wirtz in 1980 which said “ among those students who worked at least 25 hours per week while in school, their unemployment rate four years later was half of that of seniors who did not work”( Axelrod and Cooper 281). Etzioni argued that many of the students who worked part time were end up unemployed or they were had a low skilled job. Etzioni provides appropriate support for his essay by using statistics data like “58 percent of seniors acknowledged that their jobs interferes with their school work” (Axelrod and Cooper 282). These studies do provide a strong argument but these studies do not show or tell about the circumstances that force certain teenagers to work at fast food restaurants.…

Growing up in the recent generations is very challenging. Children at such young ages, even younger than teens have been faced with such perilous decisions. It is especially hard for teenagers to find acceptance at this point in their lives. Here is an instance that is so common in this day and age, yet this particular case is only fiction. A teenage boy named Donny has been going through a few changes in his appearance. His parents, Matt and Daisy, are somewhat disturbed yet they don't say much to him. Then one day Daisy gets a call from Donny's school administrator and tells her that his grades are attitude are dropping scale. He eventually gets kicked out of private school and does poorly in public school. Daisy was concerned and decided to take advice from the school and psychologist to get help from a highly reputable tutor, Calvin Applebee. Instead of Donny's parents talking to their son they hire Cal, which tries to handle Donny's lack of emotion and performance. Donny's performance didn't change with Cal, at least in the school aspect, but Cal kept reassuring Daisy and Matt that it would change and to give it more time. In result, Donny runs away after being sent home because he was expelled for being caught with drugs in his locker and months later he still has not returned home. Who is to blame? Should Daisy and Matt been more disciplined on Donny? Well, in Anne Tyler's short story the Teenage Wasteland this is just what happened. I really enjoyed this story because I feel it really focused on an issue that is so common in our generation. It was easy to read and was straight to the point. I especially enjoyed the role of the dumbfounded parents, Cal's cynical character, and in result of the all their foolishness, the action Donny resulted in taking.…

In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni talks about his belief that working, especially at fast food chain restaurants can be bad for teenagers. Working, for teenagers under some circumstances can be bad for them but sometimes its good depending on the daily schedule of whomever is working. If the teen is still in school, working is bound to affect their involvement and attendance in negative ways. Though it’s true that while working you gain on the job experience, Etzioni believes it can’t really help if it comes at the cost of education while teens think the opposite. Fast food jobs do have an advantage earning money while also learning how to manage the money they make. It boils down to whether or not risks outweigh the benefits when working jobs like this which all depends on the current situation of the teen.…

Sociology emerged from enlightenment thought, shortly after the French Revolution, as a positivist science of society. Its genesis owed to various key movements in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of knowledge. Social analysis in a broader sense, however, has origins in the common stock of philosophy and necessarily pre-dates the field. Modern academic sociology arose as a reaction to modernity, capitalism, urbanization, rationalization, and secularization, bearing a particularly strong interest in the emergence of the modern nation state; its constituent institutions, its units of socialization, and its means of surveillance. An emphasis on the concept of modernity, rather than the Enlightenment, often distinguishes sociological discourse from that of classical political philosophy.[1]…
