The Advantages of Using a Computerized Accounting Package Such as Myob Accounting Software Essay Example
The advantages of using a computerized accounting package such as MYOB accounting software.
Let me start this article by saying I am a qualified accountant who has taught accounting at a variety of levels for over 18 years. I have also worked extensively as a business consultant for small and medium size enterprises. I am continually amazed when I come across a business either not using a computerized accounting package or using spread sheets to do their accounts. Therefore I decided to write a short article on the benefits of using a computerized accounting package. The package I recommend for small to medium business is MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) accounting software package.
Small and medium sized businesses can now buy ‘off the shelf’ accounting programs at remarkably low cost. Larger businesses will often have customized programs made for their business. The accounting programs carry out functions such as invoicing, dealing with payments, paying wages and providing regular accounting reports such as trading and profit and loss accounts and balance sheets. The introduction of computerized accounting systems provide major advantages such as speed and accuracy of operation, and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to see the real-time state of the company’s financial position. In my experience I have never seen a business that has upgraded to a computerized accounting system return to paper based accounting systems.A typical computerized accounting package will offer a number of different facilities. These include: * On-screen input and printout of sales invoices * Automatic updating of customer accounts in the sales ledger * Recording of suppliers’ invoices | * Automatic updating of suppliers' accounts in the purchases ledger * Recording of bank receipts * Making payments to suppliers and for expenses * Automatic updating of the general ledger * Automatic adjustment of stock records * Integration of

A good accounting information system (AIS) will help create, maintain, and distribute the financial reports as well as perform tasks in payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and budgeting (Bagranoff, Simkin, & Norman, 2010). Management will be able to set up controls in the system allowing staff to have access to what is necessary and appropriate for their job. They will be able to call up and modify this information electronically without searching or filling out new paperwork. Data entry will be mainstreamed, allowing for less key strokes, and integration of information. This will allow for better accuracy in accounting and accounts will be able to be managed more efficiently, including processing of bi-weekly payroll. Payroll will then be sent directly to processing and reports to the correct managers. Accounts receivable will be able to track when customers use the POS system and update the sales information. Accounts payable will track when a vendor payment is due, allowing for payment processing, and appropriate management and accounting reports. The inventory system will be more accurate saving Kudler time and…

There are many advantages of using accounting software such as Sage compared to Excel. Sage and other accounting programs are the most cost effective as they are tailor made to meet the specific needs of the accountant, they contain the specific features required for an effective accounting system. They also improve the overall efficiency of the business by being more standardised and ensuring even those with a basic accounting knowledge have the ability to use the system, this helps reduce the cost of training for the company. All information is available in one application whether this simply allows you to view data or edit data. Tailor made applications may be less susceptible to fraud as they are often very complex and have security in place to restrict entry from unauthorised parties. There are many companies providing accounting software which claims to provide a cost-effective, efficient, end-to-end integrated accounting system, for example Epicor and Microsoft Dynamics GP - Project Accounting Software. Exact Globe, Batch 390 also provides real time business intelligence and works in multiple currencies; this would be effective for multi-national companies.…

Currently, most accounting information is recorded via computers and wide area networks (Journal of Accountancy, 1994a). Technology has certainly changed the face of accounting over the years. While it is unclear whether technology’s impact on accounting has been positive or negative, it is clear that technology has drastically changed the accounting profession. Often a technological advance may be an asset to a business, but a liability to the firm’s accountant. For example, information can be provided in a timely and more accurate manner, but at the price of confidentiality. Some of the impacts of technology are neither positive or negative; they are simply changes.
