The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman Essay Example
The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman

In the novel The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman, there were many different stories about
JanePittman's life. In the movie there were not as many stories as the novel, but they were still quite interesting. The novel and the movie had many similarities and differences. Some of the similarities were very noticeable. Just from the beginning, in both the movie and the novel, Ned carried the two rocks that made the fire for Jane and Ned. Ned then moves away and writes
Jane, but the letter doesn't reach Jane for a whole year. Albert Clevoue shot Ned in both. Joe had to pay colonel Dye for getting him out of trouble with the Ku Klux Klan. Colonel Dye was selfish and asked for money as "interest", most find him just greedy. Once Jane and Joe moved away,
Jane had a couple of dreams that Joe would be killed by some horse, so she went to a hoo-doo. Sure enough, Joe was killed by a horse. Later, a boy was born, and they called him "The One." His name was
Jimmy. They wanted him to become a preacher, but he didn't want to. Differences that were highly noticeable were that in the novel, the interviewer was a teacher that wanted her information for his class and in the movie, it was a magazine reporter. When Albert Clevoue died in the novel, the chariots of hell came for him, and in the movie, you don't even hear of his death. In the novel, it was a black horse that killed Joe Pittman, and the movie, white. In conclusion, the novel had more, described the stories more thoroughly. One might find that the novel is much more enlightening than the movie, but it takes more time to read the novel than it does to watch the movie! All in all, The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman was a fine novel.

She is given her name from a Yankee corporal because he feels that her slave name, “Ticey”, is unsuitable for her. She loses herself, as I would imagine Sophie to do after a lifetime of oppression. Jane saw a woman in the wall, and then became her. She took on that identity, and in her mind, then became free of ruling and imprisonment. All of my sympathy for any of the other characters in this work went solely to Jane. Her obvious mental instability made the story difficult for me to read- not because it’s what’s wrong with her, but what’s wrong with professional medical abuse, which especially back then was an ongoing problem in addition to today. I almost wonder if Gilman was trying to speak out facetiously through the story about how mistreatment of the mentally ill is a phenomenon that will continue to take place in the future. Furthermore, Jane was ill, and having been mistreated in her circumstance only made her existing condition and also the unpleasant topic for me worse. Looking at this story with Feminist theory in mind would be fitting, as her husband dismissed her voiced needs because he believed he knew what was best for her and she did not. I interpret this selection of the text as sexism; though I’m sure he loved her very much, he was still controlling and believed she couldn’t think for herself for she was a woman. Psychoanalytic Criticism may also be applied, as…

Having to watch this movie over and over with my wife, I have come to know this movie quite well. The story revolves around a spoiled Miss Scarlet O’Hara. The movie starts off with the moment she finds her (what she feels is her) true love, Ashley Wilkes is going to marry his cousin, Melanie; to Scarlet “getting even” with Ashley by marrying Melanie’s brother, Charles (who dies in the war due to Measles); to marrying her sister’s (Suellen) betrothed Mr. Frank Kennedy, who dies trying to protect Scarlet after a run in with some ruthless fellows; to her third husband and the co-main character of the story rich, playboy and black sheep to his own family, Mr. Rhett Butler. The story line of how this all boils down and the events that take place before, during and after each of these events is what builds this story up to see how a jealous and less than perfect Southern Belle such as Ms. Scarlet O’Hara, why Tara is so important to her, why Scarlet is the self-efficient, will do what it takes to make this work kind of women and how she made it through all that she endured.…

One thing in particular that the book does much better is making use of complex metaphors and themes, such as: the river for life, and oneness with nature, that string themselves together as you turn each page of the book, while in the movie the metaphors and symbolism are represented in a much different way through picture. In the book, both themes regarding the river are very vivid and clear, as they use strong imagery of nature to draw pictures in the minds of the readers. In the movie both themes are represented and referred to much less because of the lack of narration.…

    Jane Pittman

Ms. Jane Pittman was not really real active during the autobiography, but she was really mentally quick as a whip. She remembered events back early into her life and remembered great details of events that had happened and effected her life. She seemed very vivid in everything that she talked about and seemed proud of the things that went on in her life. She remembered her husband although the marriage was short and the events that lead up to her and him gaining a life to try to live freely and also the happiness that she felt during that time. She remembered and talked about the events that lead to her husband and her basically adopted son, Ned’s death. She talked about that she tried basically to save them, but at the same time did not seem to blame herself for or them for their final death or their decision to go after it that inevitably lead to their deaths. She talked about finding freedom and the reason that she went toward Ohio as a result of events of meeting the Yankee soldier Corp Brown that he was really the first one that had been nice to her. She was very vivid and seemed very sentimental in terms of the two rocks. She still had them in her possession and remembered their meaning and the priceless value that they had to her. She remembered Jimmy and it was toward the end and a result of his death that she drank from the whites only water fountain in Bayonne. It seems that she was kind of a normal lady, but that these things lead to her life and events that went on during it. Some ordinary per say people have some big things that happen to them during their life that would blow any celebrities life to pieces pretty much in…
