In the beginning of the play, Elizabeth has a tense, distant relationship with her husband because he had an affair with Abigail Williams, who is both the Proctors’ antagonist and uses pathos to cause strife between them. Elizabeth still had not been able to forgive John for this, causing their relationship to suffer. However, the accusations brought against them by Abigail force Elizabeth and John to pull together and unite against their accusers. She is able to move past John’s sin when saying, “John, it come to naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself” (Miller 138). Elizabeth is able to let John know that she does not hold his sin against him anymore, and he should not as well. Elizabeth also changes from being an incredibly truthful person to one that is willing to lie to save her husband. When John is accused, he tells the court that he has committed adultery with Abigail, and this is why Abigail is accusing him. However, the court does not believe him, so John has Elizabeth brought out to prove to the court that her husband did indeed have an affair. Since Elizabeth has never lied before in her life,…

Later in Act III Mary accuses Proctor in the court of being a devil worshiper saying: “You’re the Devil’s man! … ‘I’ll murder you,’ he says, … ‘we must go and…

John and Elizabeth both show true concern for one another while the relationship between Abigail and John is very superficial and self-serving. This is evident where John defends Elizabeth from Abigail’s malicious comments, ordering her to “speak nothin’ of Elizabeth.”, showing that John truely does care for Elizabeth and would stand up to anyone who bad-mouths her. His protective action is a display of geniune love and his commitment to stay devoted to his wife, thus portraying him as a good and repentant husband. This is unlike his relationship with Abigail, who he later calls a “child”, that sports a condescending tone. He tries to forget all past ties…

In the rewrite, I was responsible for Elizabeth’s character. My partner, John, and chose to create the scene where Abigail is fired from her position as subservient because we both felt there was a lot of room for interpretation. I chose Elizabeth because it seemed like there was a lot that she was holding back throughout the two acts that I felt like I could express for her. “It is as though she would speak but cannot” (166), Elizabeth holds her tongue far more than she should given her situation. This is just one of the many examples that show why I wished to express Elizabeth more than she ever would herself. “quietly, fearing to anger him by prodding” (166) Elizabeth stops herself from angering John by pushing any further. Elizabeth is the kind of person who is so warm-hearted that they can hurt themselves by being as they are. She should’ve pushed John to go to Salem and diverge his information immediately for it would help her in the long run. “hurt and very coldly… she starts to walk out” (167) Again instead of jumping into an argument, Elizabeth avoids any confrontation with John. This irks me because she should be expressing her feelings instead of keeping them to herself, something that doesn’t help anyone.…
