Animating Youth: The Disneyfication of Children’s Culture
Henry A. Giroux
Summary of Purpose
Giroux points out how Disney affects society. Disney shapes how kids grow up as well as our society. Within Disney movies there are a lot of subliminal messages that influence the children that watch them.
Theoretical Framework
Giroux shows how within Disney movies there are certain roles that are portrayed over and over again. These roles then get ingrained in children’s minds and from there become societal roles. These roles become accepted and just expected, like within the prison system. There are certain roles expected, or while shopping, there are different roles, and you are to stick to your role and your role only.
Method
He watched Disney movies with his sons.
Central Argument and Evidence
Giroux states that we need to start questioning Disney and viewing it critically. Disney is expected to teach morals, but what exactly are the morals being taught to our children?
Generalization and Application
We do not question the Disneyfication of our children, and most of us don’t even question the material we set them in front of for 2 hours, but when we do see something questionable we don’t change anything. Disney is seen as this great magical thing, but we don’t look close enough. It teaches our daughters that women can’t save themselves and it teaches our sons to always be the savior, that women will always need help, that women can’t do anything for themselves. This is not okay, yet we help this “magic kingdom” go on. We need to delve deeper into the world of Disney, past this pristine stereotype and see what it’s really
