Chapter 1
Pre-reading:
The map:
Weird signs/symbols - runes
Unclear landscape symbols - mountain/landscape.
Lack of details.
Arrows around the map
Magic creatures
Visualization of the story -> how far, landscape, important stuff
Simplicity: Runes -> message. Authencity -> real
Follows the story - Sets up the reader
Sets up the quest - gives the idea of the quest.
While reading:
Including the reader. Setting up the whole hobbit thing. Draws you into the world.
The narration of the hobbits seems like it is all bullshit, yet it gives the narrator authority, since he seems as he knows what the fuck was going on. He indicates that the hobbits still exists - which makes it even more bullshit.
Characterization of Bilbo Baggins
Very hobbit-ish. The hobbit values and norms are deeply burned into his mind, and he can hardly handle the thought of going elsewhere than the shire. Furthermore he is friendly, as long as people don't challenge him - then he becomes unfriendly. Peaceful, fine manners, civilized, tries to avoid "abnormality". His past: his "Took" side, repressions, adventures - abnormal hobbit life. Impressed by Gandalf's work.
Characterization of Gandalf
Adventurous, mysterious, wise -> Knows more than everybody else, old -> magic, Powerful-> knows Bilbo WILL be going, completely opposite of Hobbit Life, Enjoying life, experienced adventurers.
Gollum:
Not able to think/lower being/unintelligent - "miserable wicked creature, yet he already had a plan"
Dark lurker, in the shadows, tries to be invisible
Big brown eyes -> obsession, watching everybody
Old and slimy -> dark as darkness
Hissing, inconsistent speech -> insecurity -> childish language (my precious, whispers to him self, talks about himself in third person)-> loneliness, animalistic, intellectually superior to Gollum
Dark environment -> shadows (id, personality splitting)
The riddles+the riddle game:
Reminds him of humanity, civilized life etc. Annoys
