Roaring Twenties

The 1920s caused many things to change. The 1920s was often looked at as the period of the American prosperity and confidence. This was time period was also known as "Roaring Twenties". Lots of things occurred in this decade. Affected by the First World War, many experts point out that Americans moved back into their way of life, many say because of the cause of the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. "The Ku Klux Klan was an extreme white supremacist secret society in the U.S" (1). Another way that many Americans were affected was because of the anti-radical hysteria of the pilgrim raids, the harsh immigration laws, and the prohibition. The Roaring Twenties was a decade of succeed and improvement in the media and technology, which all led up to the rise of new things in this country.
Media was one of the most things that became popular in the 1920s and that changed many American lives. "In January 1932 the United States had 15,000 silent movies theaters with an average capacity of 507 people and a weekly after dance of 50 million" (3). Watching movies was one of the many best things in this decade. "Movies were a huge improvement to the world today" (5). Many people started to copy many styles that the movies used. For example, the women started using clothes as the actors. They were staring to show more skin and were acting like free women; they didn't care what people said about them.
Most of the women of the 1920s were becoming more independent. Many of them were doing what they wanted to. Many women were going out without being accompanied by a man, which it was mostly supposed to be, and started to drink more often and as much or more than the men. "Even the married women were rebelling; they were going out without their husbands…" (2) And were wearing clothes that weren't appropriate for married women.
Technology and media played a big part in the 1920s. Technology went as far as cutting off the jobs of people. "Technology made people starve and

The Roaring Twenties can be described as a period of American history during which people crossed the line, smashed tradition, and broke boundaries. A brand new culture was created during this period, with jazz, money, the flapper, gangster wars, loose morals, speakeasies, and last but not least, an abundance of liquor. The decade was also called the New Era, the New Freedom, the Jazz Age, the Golden Era, the Lawless Decade, or the Dry Decade. The last title was a joke- the twenties were far from dry. This is the reason why the 1920's were given names that described America's lax view of the 18th amendment and the Volstead Act. The laws were literally ignored for the 13 years that they were in effect. Prohibition was meant to cause a nationwide revolution in morality. In actuality, it did quite the opposite. Prohibition law itself had the greatest effect on the culture of the "roaring twenties," and the carefree lifestyle and feeling of rebellion and invincibility can both be connected to prohibition.…

Often called the Roaring Twenties, the postwar decade sometimes appears as one long flamboyant party, where the urban rich danced the Charleston and the foxtrot until 2 a.m. In fact, one might just as convincingly describe it as a period of individual possibility and lofty aspirations to serve the greater good. In his 1931 essay "Echoes of the Jazz Age," Fitzgerald wrote, "It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire."…

“Although music, radio, books, magazines, comics, sports, and other forms of mass entertainment were all significant in the thirties, nothing else was a central to American popular culture in that decade as motion pictures,” (McElvaine, 208). Consumer and popular culture is present in the motion picture industry after World War I. A large percentage of Americans went to the movies each week during the 1920s. Surprisingly, that number increased during the Great Depression. This could be due to the new technologies of the film industry. Sound was added to films in the late 1920s. Going to the movies was leisure activity of most Americans and it still is. Upper, middle and working class individuals all went to the movies. Neighborhood theaters allowed all races and ethnicities to go to in familiar company. Movie theaters had an impact on youth culture as well. Some historians believe that American society was reflected in cinema. Films gave Americans a sense of hope.…
