The relationship between Eliezer and his father in the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel is interesting because of the way the relationship strengthens and weakens over the course of the book. The relationship is also interesting because of the way Eliezer allows others (inmates, Kapos, etc.) to affect the way he feels towards his father.…
Night is an influential memoir of suffering, inhumanity, death and loss of faith; man’s capacity for evil and dehumanization. Elie, the protagonist, observes and experiences events of negativity with fellow Jews, his father and himself. Although this statement is correct, several other concepts are experienced and observed during his time in the concentration camps. As he meets new and familiar faces, he delivers and receives compassion, concern and humanity from new friends, past members of his Ghetto and his father in the Death Camps. //…
As an avid reader I enjoy different types of books. A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini is one of my favorite books because of its accurate depiction of Afghanistan after the defeat of the Soviet invasion. Unlike the Hosseini story of The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns focuses on the difficulties that women in Afghanistan faced when the Taliban came to power. The story revolves around two women with a substantial age difference and the personal pain they suffer in their marriages to the same husband. Hosseini portrays the change in Afghanistan for women when the Taliban came to power and the strict rules they had to abide by.…

Janet Fish is an important Realist painter born in Boston, MA, and raised on the island of Bermuda. Her early passions were for sculpture and printmaking, interests fostered by an apprenticeship with artist Byllee Lang during her youth, and the artistic endeavors of her family. She formally studied these subjects at Smith College, and went on to obtain her MFA from Yale University in 1963. While at Yale, Fish attended the Skowhegan Summer School in Maine, an experience which inspired her to move to New York to pursue a career as a painter. She concentrated on still lifes, with renewed focus on the effects of light and reflection on familiar subjects, such as fruit, flowers, and glassware. Using vivid color and masterful brushstrokes, she attempted to capture light’s movement, energy, and warmth on the canvas. In 1971, her visually rich paintings caught the eye of gallerist Jill Kornblee, who offered to represent her work. By 1982, Fish was given her first solo museum exhibition at the Delaware Museum of Art. Her paintings have since been exhibited at and become a part of the collections of a number of prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art.…
"There is more to Lady Brett Ashley than just sex and booze, but everything is intertwined with both. She is shallow and self-centered, caring only for herself. Brett’s relationship with Jake is a love/hate relationship at best." She knows they both love each other, but because she is so selfish, and herinability to come to terms with his impotence;she continues to stay in his life, leaving them both miserable. "Oh darling," Brett said, "I’m so miserable." I had that feeling of going through something that has all happened before. "You were happy a minute ago." Brett is usually able to hide her misery from other members of the…
When most individuals are having a bad day all they want to do is just get up and walk away from what they are doing. They just want to escape this harsh reality, but what if every day was a bad day and with each day passing things just kept getting worse and worse and you could never escape no matter how hard you tried. In the memoir "Night", the author Elie Wiesel faces a series of tragic events that forced him to starve to death, work to death and to make sure neither his father or himself was put up for selection.…
Having a relationship with another individual is meaningless and only worth little to nothing. Bradbury describes how Montag and Mildred’s relationship has…
Brett’s values are distorted compared to those of the native women of the city. She lacks direction in life and finds emptiness in many activities that she would have enjoyed when she were younger. Brett values the pleasure of sex before true love and respect and this is why Brett refuses to be with Jake at the beginning of the novel. Brett makes fun of Jake for bringing a date, since he cannot have sex with anyone. Brett thinks that it’s not fair for him to date, because sex is essential for her and she believes that without sex a relationship has no meaning.…
This relationship shows how being with someone you do not love can change your outlook on life. Since she was with Jody for close to 20 years, and only loved him at the beginning of the relationship, to keep this love, she became someone she was not. This means that this portion of the novel’s answer to the central question is that marriage does not mean love, and because of that, it is possible for one of the people in the relationship to lose who they are. This changes the understanding of the novel because readers now see another side to how pretending to have love can make a person change…
Do you have a dream or an idea that you think would work but no one else understands? If you do, then you would get along with Walter Lee Younger wonderfully. Set entirely in the Younger living room, this play takes place in a run-down apartment in the South side of Chicago during the middle of the twentieth century. Three generations of the family live in this crowded space.…
The author envisions that there is no love in future nuclear relationships due to insensitivity and the inability to deeply analyze actions. When Mildred’s friends came over, Montag asked them about children; one of the women,…
In Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises, Jake Barnes is the main protagonist that lives in Paris after World War I. He works as a newspaperman in Paris (Shanman 1071). He is one the many American and British expatriates who overran the city shortly after the war. He is a Midwestern, middle-class, and a lapsed Catholic. He falls in love with a nurse Lady Brett Ashley with leads to part of his downfall (Bloom 122). Jake Barnes is troubled about his injury from World War I that leaves him impotent; but throughout the novel, he learns that his masculinity does not come from his physical abilities but through his emotional state, and he learns to accept his impotence.…
Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises has always been regarded as one of Ernest Hemingway’s most hated characters. Both critics and readers have seen her simply as a bitch, and do not view her as a likeable or relatable character in any way. Her alcoholism, her use and abuse of men, and her seeming indifference to Jake Barnes’s love are just a few reasons why Hemingway’s readers have not been able to stand Brett, and do not give her a fair chance. It is clear that Jake is biased in his narration, but no one wants to question his opinions and judgments of Brett; in fact, since the book was published, readers have blindly accepted Jake’s account of her. Likewise, Margot’s character in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” is also distorted by the male characters, specifically Wilson, and made to look guilty of a crime she did not commit. Although Jake in The Sun Also Rises and Wilson in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” show Brett and Margot negatively, both women are in fact capable of good qualities, and both represent the idea of the new woman in a positive way.…
