The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Book Review Essay Example
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is a compelling book. A quote from the story says: "A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship from a safe port. Ah, yes, but once you're abroad, as you have seen, winds have a mind of their own. Be careful, Charlotte, careful of the wind you choose." The adventure and courage in this story kept me wanting to read more. Charlotte Doyle is a thirteen-year-old girl. She is traveling to America on a ship to be reunited with her family. The year is 1832 and she is leaving Liverpool, England. She has just finished at an all-girls private school. Charlotte is the daughter of a wealthy shipping businessman. Captain Jaggery is the captain of the Seahawk. He is very strict and proper. People are afraid of him and when Charlotte first boards the ship, she is not sure why. They become friends right away and Captain Jaggery asks her to keep an eye on the crew. Zachariah is an older black man who is the cook on the ship. He gives Charlotte a dirk and warns her that the captain is dangerous. One day she finds a round robin which means that the crew is rebelling against the captain. She tells the captain right away and things turn bad when he kills Zachariah. They become enemies and Charlotte realizes she has no other choice but to become part of the crew. Then the first mate, Mr. Hollybrass, is murdered. Captain Jaggery accuses Charlotte and locks her up to await her trial. She is going to be tried by her shipmates. I thought that this book was adventurous and exciting. The author gave a lot of detail and the story line was very interesting. I liked the plot because it was exciting and Charlotte goes through a big change in the story. The book kept me wondering what would happen next. I did not like how the story ended though because it is probably not what I would have done. I could relate to Charlotte when she wanted to help the crew and become a part of them because that is how I would have felt to. I would have felt

    The protagonists in the book are the Greasers and the antagonists are the Socs. The main characters are Darry, Soda, Dally, Bob, Ponyboy, and Johnny. Darry is tall, muscular, smart and very strict towards Ponyboy. Darry yells at Ponyboy and always seems to expect better from Ponyboy. An example is when Dally enters the burning church to save Pony and says, “For Pete’s sake, get outa there! That roof is going to cave in any minute.” Bob is rich and undisciplined by his parents who make him feel like he has the power to do anything he pleases. Bob is intimidating to the Greasers like Johnny and Pony because he has the ability to do almost anything he wants. An example of Bob picking on Pony and Johnny is when he orders a Soc to give Ponyboy a bath in the park fountain by drowning him as a sort of cruel joke (page 55). Ponyboy is more emotional than all of the Greasers and takes feelings in to deeper consideration. Pony is not as violent as other Greasers and is very friendly. An example is when Pony went to the drive-in movie; he easily became friends with the popular Soc cheerleader, Cherry. This shows a lot about his personality…

    One of the many injustices in Maycomb County is racial injustice, more specifically the injustices towards African-Americans. For example, the townspeople of Maycomb they have such a hate towards African-American people, for example the use of the word nigger. It is a word that the “common people” meaning the people who had no deference for them. Which leads to segregation, of churches, schools, and the courtroom where Tom Robinson's trial is held. “The Colored balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second -story veranda, and from it we could see everything.”(219). Due to the racism, and prejudice the African-American people are only allowed to sit in one area of the courtroom, their own. This could be compared to the Holocaust, the Nazi's could be compared to the ignorant people of Maycomb, and the Jews are the African-American people who are subjected to the hatred and bigotry of the racist's in Maycomb. It may only seem that the white people are racist towards the blacks, but the blacks are also racist towards the whites. For example, when Jem and Scout go to church with Calpurnia. “When Lula came up the pathway toward us Calpurnia said,'Stop right there, nigger.' Lula stopped, but she said, 'You ain't got no business bringin' white chillun here-they got their church,we got our'n. It is our church, ain't it, Miss Cal?' Calpurnia said,'It's the same God, ain't it?' Jem said 'Let's go home, Cal, they don't want us here-' ”(158) As one may see there is hostility on both sides, white and black. This hostility is like the fighting between dogs and cats, some of them get along but some are always fighting, but they will never win.…
