The Wizard of Oz Essay Example
1. Short summary of the film.- Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage
2. The film's genre. - Fantasy, Children's novel
3. Major character's conflict and change. - Dorothy only considers herself as an ordinary girl, but she is more. She liberates or improves nearly everyone who comes into contact with her. Not only does she help the scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion, she defeats the wicked Witch of the West. Throughout the journey that Dorothy had to make to get back home, she made many friends, went through hardships, and followed her guide to achieve her goal.
4. Cinematic significance of one scene in the film. - The opening and closing Kansas scenes were filmed in black-and-white, while the Oz scenes were done in sumptuous (and expensive) Technicolor. Dorothy's amazement at entering the world of color mirrored audiences' feelings about the new technology.
5. One important use of camera angles. - The directors also used the camera to add to the mise en scène of certain sequences such as the shots when Dorothy is clicking the ruby slippers together and saying, "There’s no place like home." The shot is long in duration and is a close up on Dorothy. The lens slightly blurs the focus and then eventually overlays three images together: Dorothy's face, her ruby slippers, and a starburst-like pattern. This helps add to the idea that Dorothy is crossing back into the real world from the dream world.

    Back in 1939 there was no CGI or any other special editing tools. How the special effect was filmed in the studio was how it remained in the movie. There are way too many examples of this to fit into this paper, but I can give a few. You can tell where the yellow brick road meets the matte painting that makes up the background, especially when the painting blows in the wind when the characters walk by it. The fire screen that was used to block the trap door exit used by the wicked witch in Munchkinland. The use of the different colored horses when they are in the Emerald City, this was a simple special effect created by sprinkling powered gelatin 4 different horses to create the colors.     Having to watch this movie over and over with my wife, I have come to know this movie quite well. The story revolves around a spoiled Miss Scarlet O’Hara.     The first sequence of the movie was set in Kansas. This sequence in the movie was colored in sepia exemplifying the blandness of the setting. This sepia tonality was coupled with harsh light, lowering the contrast. Once Dorothy arrived in Oz, the coloring shifted to vibrant Technicolor and a soft light. The score of the film has eerie association with its characters, winning the film an Oscar. In the scene of the house in the twister, many overlaid events occurred outside the window. The special effects of the people going past the window and the first reveal of the witch were very complicated given the time period.     A combination of warm and cool colors helped to set up each scene. Particularly grim scenes were washed in red or a neutral light to set them apart from the rest of the scenes. It helped to show the mental state of the characters, thus revealing their true emotions and character. Special lighting, such as the front spotlight on the child with a sword and the backlights on the paper walls, were particularly beautiful as they broke away from traditional hanging lights. Many different colors were used throughout the play, but they did not overwhelm the audience. These colors worked well with the dull, plain colors of the costumes and contrasted with the black paint. Furthermore, it helped to establish the silhouettes on the paper walls. Without these special lights, the silhouettes would not have been as prominent and the audience could have overlooked the black splatters. The lights really gave the play its tone and, without it, the play would have been similar to other productions like it.
