However, after Tom Robinson is convicted for a crime that he clearly did not commit, Atticus’ mercy for humanity begins to waver. Even though he knows that this case was inherently against Robinson, he still feels distraught that the jury was prejudiced enough to declare a man guilty, only because of the color of his skin. After the verdict, Atticus “... left the courtroom, but not by his usual exit. He must have wanted to go home the short way, because he walked quickly down the middle aisle toward the south exit… He did not look up.” (Lee, 215). Throughout the novel, Lee has created Atticus as the wise figure who seeks the goodness in everything.. He teaches Jem and Scout to walk in one’s shoes before judging them and that the surface of one's life does not accurately portray what is within. This scene shows that human malevolence can change Atticus’ attitude, despite how strongly he feels that every human has a part of them that is pure. Lee’s juxtaposition of Atticus’ character gives the reader insight on how an incident that involves the abuse of human virtue can change one’s attitude and…

Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird depicts the childhood and coming of age of a young girl named Jean-Louise “Scout” Finch. The main focus of this novel is the trial of an African-American man named Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a white woman, and Scout’s father, Atticus, who has been assigned to defend him. Written during the Civil Rights Movement, Lee’s purpose is to highlight the racial prejudice that had permeated throughout the Southern culture. She achieves this in the trial scenes, where she embeds Atticus’s strong dialogue into the context of the vivid imagery she presents of the trial.…

He does not let anything stand in his way, especially prejudice people. Atticus uses his lawyer skills and intelligence to win his battles. He will do anything that he knows is right in his heart. In the story Atticus faces a very scary moment that requires a lot of courage from him. Atticus goes one night to protect Tom from a mob. He knows that these people could easily hurt him and get Tom, but he has courage. He lets nothing stand in his way of the truth.“’ He in there Mr. Finch?” a man said. “He is,” we heard Atticus answer, “and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up”’ (Lee 202). Tom doesn’t even know that Atticus did any of this for him. Atticus most likely knew Tom would never find out and did it out of good will. It takes true courage to risk your life out of just plain good will. Even Mrs. Dubose was against Atticus defending Tom Robinson. Every day he was still the exact same—nice and polite—to her and everyone else. He was courageous and did all of this to do what was…

Racial prejudice is an ongoing issue in many societies, and has been a very persuasive element since. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee uses the constant repetition of the derogatory phrase ‘nigger lover’ as a way of demonstrating the hatred shown towards anyone who supported the African Americans. With this, we are able to understand exactly how prejudice and corrupted racist thoughts could be. However, there are many more racially prejudice ideas presented in the ‘Tom Robinson Case’ of the novel. Tom Robinson is an African American who was convicted by Mr Ewell for raping his daughter. Lee makes it quite obvious in the novel that Tom Robinson was actually innocent and it was Mr Ewell who raped his daughter. Yet, one of the most respected Negros (Tom Robinson) is denied innocence over the most despised white man of Maycomb County (Mr Ewell). This major comparison is the most apparent technique Lee uses to totally show how racially prejudice people could be. To further that, Tom Robinson is murdered despite his innocence. As a result, a sorrowful feeling is created in the reader, making us question “Is this really how racism is?”.…

Aunt Alexandra tells Jem and Scout they have to act like Finches. Initially, Atticus agrees with her, but says differently while he puts his children to bed, that “I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” (178). Atticus doesn’t want himself or his kids to act like the rest of their family. He likes everyone to think for themselves and be their own person. Again, Atticus is genuine when Heck is telling Atticus that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, but in his shock, Atticus doesn’t believe him and thinks Tate is trying to cover up what Jem did. Atticus tells Mr. Tate that, “I don’t live that way.” (365). Atticus is an honest person, and he always tries to be honest and outright. He doesn’t act different around certain people or in certain social settings. As the Finches’ neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” (61).…

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird). This quote defines one of the most important messages in the book, concerning power and prejudice. I think that this quote could be used to describe many situations throughout the book. In my essay I will show examples of the key events throughout the book that have been omitted or altered from the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” and how they contribute to the degradation of the critical messages in the book.…

Lee’s book has been banned in several cities and counties all across the continent.…
