A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other.” In my own words this quote means that “There is a time when people have to change, to change their form of thought. A time when we need to be scared but help each other.” The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee supports the meaning of Wangari Maathai’s quote through the use of the literary devices of Symbolism and Setting. The author of the quote Wangari Maathai has used the literary device of Setting like in To Kill a Mockingbird. This literary device of setting relates to both the quote and novel. The quote talks about “to reach a higher moral ground.” This is how the novel has talked about the characters in the story being racist. Also about how they need to change their way of thought about other races. The literary device of Symbolism supports my opinion of the quote by Wangari Maathai. It supports my opinion because the Mockingbird from To Kill a Mockingbird symbolizes Tom Robinson. He never causes any harm and tries to do good deeds but he still gets blamed for a crime he does not commit.
