Alternate Ending
Jem and I walked through the hollow night of the schoolyard, Jem not caring for my clumsiness in my childish suit.
“Was I really that bad at the pageant?” I asked.
“I found it amusing.” Giggled Jem.
Jem’s smirk remark did not make me feel much better, so I quickly changed the topic.
“Jem it’s too dark outside, I can’t see anything.” I frantically said. Jem didn’t respond, “Jem it’s too dark outside, I can’t see anything.” I repeated, hoping this time to catch his attention.
“Hush.” He whispered. “Can you hear that?” Jem asked.
“Hear what? I didn’t hear anything.” I responded.
“Probably just the trees movin’ in the wind.” Jem pleaded. We started to walk towards home again, then I asked “Do you think Atticus is home?”
Jem stopped moving and motioned me to be quiet. “I just heard something.” He said. “What was it?” I asked
“It sounded like footsteps. Someone is following us!” Jem explained.
We started screaming and holding each other, when out of the dark ran Cecil Jacobs.
“Haha! Got you guys again! You two are too easy to scare!” He exclaimed while laughing.
“Cecil Jacobs, you are nothing more than an old pig!” I yelled.
We all had a good laugh about it then moved on. We started walking towards home again, all of us holding hands so we wouldn’t get lost in the night. We were all talking for a while, then I asked “Jem, do you think Atticus will let Cecil stay for the night?”
Jem responded with “I don’t see much else Atticus could do, it’s too dark to send him…”
When all of a sudden I feel someone grab me and throw me to the ground. I felt a sharp pain in my leg and I screamed as loud as I could. Somebody was on top of me and there was nothing I could do about it. I heard a demanding voice say “shut up girl!” The voice was recognizable, it was Bob Ewell. He wouldn’t let me go. Then someone grabbed Mr. Ewell and said “Let go of scout!” it was Jem! Jem
