To Kill a Mockingbird-Social Hierarchy Essay Example
Social Hierarchy is important in small towns such as Maycomb, Alabama in To Kill A Mockingbird. In little towns you tend to know most of the people that live there, and more about them. There are also more secrets and rumors, and some mysteries, like the Radley’s. The residents in the town may be more cautious about what they say and do because they are insecure, and more people know them. Most people may know the social classes in the town, and where they are on the ladder. From the top of the ladder to the bottom, the social hierarchy for the characters would be Scout Finch, Walter Cunningham, Little Chuck Little, Burris Ewell, Miss Caroline Fisher, and Calpurnia. At the top of the social structure in the novel are the white men. One of them as which is Atticus Finch, and Scout Finch being is his daughter makes her above the rest. Walter Cunningham is below them. Even though he is a hard worker, he is unable to afford anything, and is considered white trash. He is a farmer, his position is above the African Americans and the Ewells. Just because they were white trash didn’t mean they weren’t always bad people. He is so poor he has to pay Atticus Finch for his work in gifts such as food. “They never took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have.” (Lee 20) Little Chuck Little and Burris Ewell are next to each other in the social ladder, but Little Chuck Little is on top. This is because the Ewells are the lowest of the low amongst the whites in Maycomb, they are also called white trash. Burris Ewell is also dirty, and he can be disrespected by others for that, like when Miss Caroline found the cootie in his hair. “I was just walking by when it crawled out of his hair…just crawled out of his hair.” (26) Burris Ewell’s dad is lazy and a drunk, and wasn’t respectful of other people. People don’t really like Burris Ewell, or his dad. Bob Ewell got his family and himself a bad reputation, because that’s what he chose, he reinforced their bad

In To Kill a Mockingbird, social class is crucial to everything, from respect to survival, especially during the crude 1930’s in the southern state of Alabama. With the country still recovering from World War 1, The Stock Market Crash of 1929, the Great Depression and even the Civil War, nobody is in the clear of tough economic times, crime, and for most, poverty. However, caucasians with a more reliable profession that contained no manual labor such as Atticus Finch, a wise, noble, reliable and very much respected father and lawyer who represents the Tom Robinson case, Judge Taylor, the judge of the Tom Robinson case, along with Miss Maudie and Miss Stephanie, who had no stated profession, had this stronger respect because of their higher…

The groups of people in Maycomb rarely allow different people to interact with each other. Sometimes, people get excluded because of the colour of their skin, or by the amount of money they carry in their pockets. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Helen Robinson, the wife of the convicted black man, can’t find a job after her husband gets accused of rape. She needed to support her family by getting a job, but nobody wanted to employ her because of what her husband was rumored to have done. Prejudice against Tom Robinson lead to his wife and kids not being able to get what they needed. Another example of exclusion in To Kill a Mockingbird is when Aunt Alexandra wouldn’t let Scout play with Walter Cunningham because he was poor. She says that his family is different from the Finches, and that he wasn’t as good as them. She also places certain families of Maycomb into groups that exclude the rest of the town from their activities. An example of this is when she ways that all Penfield women are flighty, after a Penfield girl giggled during church. According to her, all Maycomb families have a streak of their own, and that places them into their own groups. This lead s to exclusion from various other groups, because people don’t think you belong with them, and not being able to get what you want. If a person can’t feed their kids or support themselves, they can’t lead a good…

What is a very apparent concept in the story is the inequality and prejudice that exist in the small town. In Maycomb, the wealth of an individual is a way that consistently divided the social status of the townspeople. For example, The Finchers and other middle class people have more prestige and social status over the lower class townspeople, such as the Cunninghams and the Ewells. The most common and discriminatory inequality in the town is that the race of an individual would unjustly determine their social status. For example, the blacks, despite having more amiable qualities than the Ewells, still remain at the bottom of the social hierarchy for the only reason being their race. This lead to the Ewells exploiting the town’s racial prejudices…

In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Maycomb county inevitably has a specific social structure. The people of Maycomb county each have different statuses and places in society. There is a top to every social hierarchy, and starting at the top in Maycomb county are the wealthy white families. Included in this social class are the Finches. Atticus Finch is a white lawyer; therefore he makes a good income and is a highly respected figure which places him and his family in this specific social class. Many of the Finches’ neighbors who live on the same street are also in the same social class. A step below in the ‘social ladder’ is the middle class. These people are white and are the average inhabitants. For example, Heck Tate , one of the characters in…

Prejudice is a preconceived opinion established without any thought, reason or knowledge. It is an act of discrimination towards those considered subordinate compared to others. Prejudice is a habit that one develops with experience and the effects of a negative surrounding environment. During the 1930s, prejudice was a more critical issue, as demonstrated in Harper Lee’s award winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. Throughout the novel, there are various situations of discrimination. However, few characters in the novel portray egalitarianism, which is a belief that favors everyone equally. One remarkable character that portrays egalitarianism is Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. The seven year old portrays egalitarianism through her actions and…

As we mature, we learn how to manage situations with the best approach; unfortunately for Scout however, having a great deal of social mishaps, will have a lot of learning and correcting to do. Scout is, altogether, a rather tranquil adolescent but, when she fails to come to terms with another, she tends to settle the dispute aggressively. There have been several incidents in which Scout had difficulty in handling, resulting in destructive and vulgar tendencies. Hopefully, Scout will progressively continue to learn how to humbly settle disputes. This aggressive manor is not a commendable feature in Scout, as she should choose alternative methods to adjudicate brawls, in which require no physical or vulgar aggression.…

In To Kill A Mocking Bird, Harper Lee portrays racial bias from low class whites to maintain their position above blacks in the social hierarchy. After Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a mob of white men goes to the Maycomb jail to lynch Tom Robinson. “ You know what we want,’ Another man said. ‘Get aside from the door Mr. Finch.” Tom Robinson has been accused of rape, but he has not been put on trail, but these men decide to take it into their own hands and kill him just because he is black. These men do not personally know Tom Robinson, but if he were to win this case then these men would be at the bottom of the social hierarchy because of their socioeconomic status and respect in the community so they have want to lynch Tom Robinson to show their superiority over blacks. People like the Ewells are terrible people, and a disgrace to the community and the only thing keeping them from the bottom of the social hierarchy is the fact that their white. “Every town the size of Maycomb had families like the Ewells. No economic fluctuations changed their status people like the Ewells lived as guests of the county in prosperity as well in the depths of a depression.” The Ewells are a disgrace to the community, and live off of everyone else but they still have a slightly higher status than the whites only because of the color of their skin. The blacks in Maycomb are a hard working people and should have more respect than the Ewells in the community so people like the Ewells try so hard to put the blacks down to keep from the bottom. In Maycomb the Blacks are better harder working than many of the whites, but the whites have more respect just because of the color of their skin.…

This arose from the scene where Walter was drowning his dinner with syrup. Scout can use this lesson to be more respectful to her guest. The lesson that Atticus taught Scout is that you must walk around in their skin to fully understand them. This arose from when Scout did not was to go to school and for Atticus to teach her just like how Atticus's father taught him and Uncle Jack. Scout could use this to be more empathic with other…

Scout learns a lot about her town and how everybody feels about different issues. Race is a major factor of being discriminated. However, how much money your family has is big in being discriminated. Scout attempts to tell their new school teacher, Miss Caroline, about how Walter Cunningham won’t borrow money because “The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back- no church baskets and no scrip stamps. They never took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have. They don’t have much, but they get along on it” (22). Scout and Jem ended up bringing Walter home with them for lunch that day and she realized that Walter was a complex individual with his own burdens and dreams. Another example of people being discriminated would be Dolphus Raymond, a white man who is married to a colored woman and lives with the colored folk. He and his wife have lots of mixed children. Jem explains to Scout that the mixed children are real sad because “they don’t belong anywhere. Colored folks won’t have ‘em cause they’re half white; white folks won’t have ‘em cause they’re colored, so they’re just in-betweens, don’t belong anywhere” (184). Scout realizes then that her town judges on skin…

As pointed out by a pondering Jem, “There are four kinds of folks in [Maycomb]. There’s the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there’s the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes.” (Lee, 302). The difference between these groups of people is based on their social class, their wealth, as well as their connection to the Finch family (as per Aunt Alexandra). This four tier system begins with the Finches and the townspeople at the top. These are the upper to middle class working people of Maycomb that contribute the most to the town. The second tier below that is the Cunninghams. The Cunninghams are poor farmers with an inbred, incestuous family tree and Aunt Alexandra refers to them as “trash” because of this. The third tier is the Ewells, who can also be referred to as “white trash” by their lifestyle and them literally living nearby to Maycomb’s dump. The fourth tier are the Negroes, which are despised by all because of typical Southern racism. These people are connected together by Jem’s explanation: “The thing about it is, our kind of folks don’t like the Cunninghams, the Cunninghams don’t like the Ewells, and the Ewells hate and despise the colored folks.” (Lee, 303). The natural hierarchy that this creates is due to prejudice, since the majority of every layer dislikes the layers below them and so on. They form assumptions in their head based off of the limited information they receive on the topic, leading to the ideology created by this demographic ranking system. This is how prejudice divides people in Maycomb’s…

Maycomb County is a town filled with mostly friendly people. They are very close to each other and know everyone well; this is proven as Scout is quoted saying “no one needs introduction while talking in the phone, in Maycomb everyone knows everyone else’s voices well enough”. Their closeness might be reasoned from their ever-recurring social activities such as such as what is faced by Atticus who is “related by blood or marriage to nearly every family in the town” Besides that, they are very cooperative and help each other whenever problems arise. This shown when Miss Maudie's house catches on fire, as the onomatopoeia “muffled scurrying sounds” gives the idea that everyone in the neighbourhood (including Mr Nathan Radley who very seldom mingles with others) wakes up from their midnight sleep to help to save Miss Maudie’s belongings and to put out the fire. From here, it is very obvious that the strong relationship of the people in Maycomb County leads them to be very sociable and helpful people. But on the other hand Maycomb has its bad points too. They also face “Maycomb’s usual disease”, which is prejudice. Their closest prejudice victim’ is Boo Radley, who is shunned from the society just because he is very different from them a very mysterious and reclusive man. As they had never really known anything about Boo, they spread bad stories and rumours about him. Things are worst when any small crimes done in…
