Rarely has a film impacted an audience and held the test of time as the film Gone with the Wind. I have always been curious if director, Victor Fleming and producer, David O. Selznick and screenplay writer, Sidney Howard knew what they were creating a masterpiece and how this film would have such an enormous impact on audiences for years to come. Interestingly enough there were some who thought the film should not be made, as Irving Thalberg said to Louis B. Meyer in 1936, “Forget it Louis, no Civil War picture ever made a nickel” (Ten Films that Shook the World). This romantic melodrama was released in January, 1940, yet it was at the 1939 Academy Awards that Gone with the Wind was nominated for thirteen awards, the eight awards that were won were Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Color Cinematography, Art Direction, and Editing (Ten Films that Shook the World). ”If the total income for Gone with the Wind were to be adjusted for inflation, it would be considered the most successful of all time” (Ten Films that Shook the World). When you think of “Gone with the Wind” from a film criticism standpoint, it’s hard to judge it by the Auteur Theory, which states that the director is supreme overlord of a films artistic merit because in the case of Gone with the Wind, Fleming takes a back seat to Selznick. The film chronicles the grandeur and splendor of the Old South, how it crumbles during the Civil War and the New South during reconstruction. The characters are basically simple folk living a simple life until their world is shattered by the Civil War and this devastation creates a new world, one which will require courage and resilience to survive. Selznick genius in the aspects of cinematography lighting, sound, costumes and societal impact and genre…
The year was 1992. A small team of animators were soon to present to the world an innovation that would forever change the realm of cinema. Until this point, special effects artists were mostly limited to methods of stop-motion animation and practical effects to create fantastical displays within a film. That was until ground-breaking director Stephen Spielberg, who is most famous for his work in classic films such as E.T. and Jaws, made a single decision that would influence film-making to this day. It was the decision to utilize computer graphics in the iconic production, Jurassic Park. Filmmakers had used computer graphics previously but for CGI to break through, technology needed to be advanced…

In a very far away land, lived a man, a man with a very different life compared to you or me. He doesn’t know right from wrong. He sits by himself all alone, wondering what his purpose in life is. He’s always wondered what’s going on in the town below him. One day something very scary happened, a visitor came. He doesn’t know what to once he was exposed to the town. This is very usual in Tim Burton’s films. Tim Burton’s eerie style is best conveyed through his use of pan, establishing shot, and front/back lighting.…
I think that the members of the technical crew are mainly technical, executing what the Director of Photography tells them to do and the Director's vision. However, the D.O.P. definitely has the most creative freedom out of all of the roles, in my opinion. As cinematography is their passion, they know what looks good on camera and can be innovative in what they shoot (of course, if the director says that it is okay) to make different shots unique and creative. In addition, sometimes the Gaffer and Sound Mixer can be creative for the film's benefit. Last semester, I worked on a film set in which I witnessed the Director, Gaffer, and Sound Mixer working together to solve problems on set. The Gaffer and Sound Mixer would give suggestions on the placement/coloring of the lights or different sounds to capture. Even though the Director's vision and creativity are the most important, the Gaffer and Sound Mixer do have a bit of room to be creative in order to help the shoot.…
I like your explanation of the lighting used in San Francisco, the light near the bridge captured the scene perfectly. Although produced in 1958, the use of lighting and cinematography presented the characters with an eminence sense. Key lighting and minimal prompts played a significant role in “Vertigo,” in one of the beginning scenes, all you can detect is Scottie hanging from the building by the roof siding, as he escapes the police. I selected “The Godfather,” also filmed with key and dark lighting scenes. A memorable scene with dark lighting in “The Godfather,” shows when the Don will invite the guest to ask for favors, portrayed as the man in charge.…
Tim Burton is known for his movies that are appealed by children, yet have a dark and eerie twist. His films all have certain cinematic techniques that create a spooky and creepy feeling. In these films, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, and Corpse Bride all use lighting, music/sound, and editing as these techniques. In Burton’s films he uses many cinematic techniques to create the dark and eerie feeling.…

The key to a great movie is using cinematography to control the mood and tone of a piece in order to affect the viewers' feelings. In Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", the cinematographer manipulated the lighting to create a certain mood and cast of light onto the scenes. Since lighting is the key to cinematography, it can have a major impact on a films narrative. During the scene of The Shining, entitled "Great Party, Isn't It?" the cinematographer used light to put emphasis on what was happening.…
Human kind has always displayed a desire, within their literature, to engross themselves on a journey of self reflection. However often these journeys can also be negatively forced upon a character. Skrzynecki, in his text ‘Immigrants at central station’ explores how forced journeys have dehumanised and isolated his family on their journey of migration. However, in ’10 Mary street’ Skrzynecki focuses on positive outcomes of journeys that him and his family have taken on their own. Furthermore ‘Girl, interrupted’, the 1999 movie directed by James Mangold, Outlines the segregation and inequality of forced journeys whilst also looking at journeys with positive outcomes of self enlightenment that were chosen to be taken.…

Film makers should definitely have the ability to reflect on the greatest triumphs and tragedies of our time by effectively presenting them through the use of film techniques. The Help, directed by Tate Taylor, allows us to on the greatest triumphs and tragedies. Tate Taylor presents these triumphs and tragedies in his 2011 film, The Help by using a range of characters and situations, as well as through film techniques such as dialogues, camera work and costume.…
The role of a director is very challenging. According to Goodykoontz and Jacobs(2011), “His or her role is often similar to that of the foreman, translating the screenwriter’s story so that the actors and crew can carry it out. And like the foreman, it’s up to the director to turn the elements he or she builds with—words, images, and sound—into something not just coherent but entertaining, even moving.” The director’s role in the design process is to be in charge of the entire production and to hold the responsibility of the final output on the film. The director often plays a part as a facilitator. He or she will oversee the project and make sure that everything is conducted in a timely manner.…
