The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexis is about a boy called Arnold Spirit. He is a Native American who lives on an Indian Reservation. Arnold has had a hard life, he was born with many medical problems, has been beaten up since he was young, has alcoholic parents, has lost many friends and family members, and is very poor. Arnold doesn’t let these inconveniences stop him. Arnold is a very courageous person. Throughout the book, he has demonstrated how much courage he has. Arnold takes the words you can do it, and uses them to improve his life. Arnold proved he has courage when he decides to leave his school on the reservation and transfer to an all white school twenty miles away. Arnold’s teacher shows Arnold he has enough courage to leave the reservation school, he showed him he has hope. “And now you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope. “Where is Hope?” I asked. “Who has hope?” “Son,” Mr. P said. “You’re going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation.” (Alexie 43) Arnold realized he had enough courage to find hope. Arnold uses Mr. P advise, and by doing so shows everyone it take courage to find hope but you can find it. Another proof of Arnold’s courage is his ability to overcome his grief. By the age of 14, he had attended 42 funerals, and most of the deaths were alcohol related. The two deaths that affected him the most were his sister’s and grandmothers. “ I was joyless. I mean, I can’t even tell you how I found the strength to get up every morning. And yet, every morning, I did get up and go to school.” (Alexie 174) We can tell by this quote that Even though Arnold was overcome with grief over the loss of his grandmother, he still found the strength and courage inside himself to go to school.
