Volleyball: Heartland Conference and St. Edward Essay Example
Volleyball-My Hobby

I am on the volleyball team here at St. Edward's University and I absolutely LOVE it! To say that volleyball is a hobby of mine is a bit of an understatement. It is a very big part of my life and a good majority of my time is spent playing or training for volleyball. I've been playing volleyball since i was eleven years old and my passion for the sport has continued to grow over the past eight years. I believe i have learnt several valuable lessons from playing volleyball.

Volleyball has taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. I have gained the skills necessary to work within a group and have had the opportunity to be part of a team for many years. Also, as a student athlete I have gotten a crash course in time management which will be very helpful when I get out into the "real world". Volleyball has become more than just a sport over the years. My team mates have become like family, and the game has developed into a great passion of mine. I love playing and I value all the lessons that volleyball has taught me on and off the court.

I have been a part of the St. Edward's Volleyball team for the past two years I have been at St. Edward's. I play outside hitter. I play both back row and front row which gives me the opportunity to dig, pass and hit. I love all the aspects of the game, but i especially enjoy defense. I love digging hard hits from the opposing team and stopping them from getting a point. I was awarded Freshman of the Year for the 2008 Season along with First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region in 2008. This year, I was elected Co-captain along with Senior, Lizzy Lepore. I am extremely excited about this season and believe we have what it takes to go very far! Nearly half of our team is new this year, with four freshman and two transfers. Early on in pre-season we took a trip to Padre, Mexico where we trained, practice and bonded. Within this three day trip we all grew very close and now we have

I have been playing basketball basically my whole life, it is has shaped me into the person I am today. I started with just a ball and a hoop in my cousins front yard. I would just chuck the ball at hoop for fun, horsing around with my cousins. In elementary and middle school I would play with my friends at recess shooting around, dribbling in circles for the fun of it. I was even better then most of the boys who would play with my group on the courts. When I entered high school that was when I realized I was truly in love with the game. High school was where it was taken to a whole 'nother level. I was introduced to the real dynamics of the sport, it was where I learned that if I really want to do something that I love I had to put my all into it. I had to prove that I was one-hundred percent committed to the game. Practicing everyday for two hours, and…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

A long term goal of mine was to be an Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association State Champion. This goal came from my dad and cousins because they were all volleyball players. I wanted to follow in their footsteps of success. To achieve this goal I knew that I needed to participate in a select volleyball team. I knew this would increase my overall skill level and it would prepare me for the more intense high school volleyball I would face later on. Select volleyball wasn't easy. Different obstacles always seemed to come up. It would range from being placed on a lower quality team or having coaches that didn't have my best interest in mind. The most difficult thing for me to face was always injuries. During my sophomore year I suffered an…

As a freshman, with previous experience playing volleyball in middle school and at the beach, this essence of competition was very attractive to me and so I tried out and made the junior varsity team. Last year, during my club season, after sitting on the bench for the first part of the year, my coach recognized my improvement and hard work and gave me the starting role for the second half of the season. The little voice in my head telling me "you'll never make it!" or "you're not good enough!" inspired (and continues to inspire) me to persistently improve every aspect of my playing during practice and such an attention to detail, combined with my inner motivation to improve, lead to my…

In 2015, I realized a long standing goal of playing on the varsity lacrosse team as a freshman. In fourth grade when I first started playing lacrosse, I had always dreamed of how far I could go. That dream of mine always stuck with me and it was my motivation to continually get better. When the coaches were separating the players to form the JV and varsity teams, they called my name to the varsity side. The only freshman to be called to the varsity side for the 2015 season. I had doubt and negativity on my shoulders from the returning players just a day before and now here they are congratulating me. They acted as if they were my friends only because they saw something in me that they never had nearly as much of. Talent. My goal had been reached,…

I have never been one to deal with failure very well, so when it hit me square in the face I definitely had a lot to learn. I have always been pretty athletic and very competitive, so when I was asked to join the volleyball team I was more than thrilled. However, after just a few practices I could tell that this was not going to be the same level of competition I was used to. Not only was I the shortest one on the team (which in volleyball was definitely a disadvantage), but I was easily the least experienced. My mom had been an outstanding player in high school, so I elicited some help from her. I practiced and practiced until I got to the point where I could at least compete with some of the other girls.…

Being the first-born child in my family has allowed me to act as the pioneer among my siblings. Learning to lead in the home has been exciting but daunting at times. As the oldest child, I have had to learn responsibilities and patience with the supporting love and care of my mom and dad. They have always cheered me on, guiding and encouraging me to follow my interest in volleyball. For example, during my middle school years, I expressed an interest in volleyball. My parents made it possible for me to improve my volleyball skills through joining a club team and through attending summer camps. With…

For me, I am someone who plays volleyball because I feel like in certain ways I am obligated to playing. If I were to quit volleyball I would literally do nothing with my life. This sport is very much time consuming and without it, I'd probably be a fat potato that does not extracurricular activities or hobbies what so ever. Hopefully, by the end of this project, I am able to find other things that I am interested in than just volleyball. When deciding what I wanted to do for my project I had no idea what to do. It felt like I had no life outside of volleyball and school. Volleyball was my hobby, but it was not something that I truly enjoyed doing. After going into conference with Mrs. Lee to brainstorm the different topics that I could do for my Quality Project. She asked questions that were supposed to provoke ideas. She would ask me, "What do you care about?" or "What do you do in your free time?" I told her how I play volleyball and how I…
