The Southern Mainland colonies considered the Church of England as their dominant faith although there was some religion freedom offered. North Carolina was the most open-minded in this region because of the fact that they were non-religious as well as resistant to authority and regarded as “poor” by Virginia standards. In general perception, this area was more concerned in acquiring slaves for producing tobacco and rice as exports and had a tough time establishing churches or schools since all the plantations were scattered and there were no cities in the area. The vicinity was also more ethnically mixed in places such as Virginia and therefore, made more accepting because of the different cultures and frankly, because they had nowhere to attend mass. Also the colonies of Florida, owned by the Spaniards, and Louisiana, controlled by the French, were mainly established for the purpose of making a fortune only.…

The Puritans were one of the most radical groups that left England; they were extremely pious and wanted to create a safe haven for themselves to be able to practice their religion, beliefs, and ideals freely. Puritans main reason for immigrating to America was to create their "City Upon a Hill" , since they were persecuted in England for their beliefs, and because they wanted to reform the Anglican church. They didn´t immigrate for economical reasons, like many of their brethren did in the Chesapeake Bay colonies. Puritans instead wanted to create their model Christian society based on the principals of high morality, and strong family and community lives. Puritan society was based on certain morals and principals which enabled the Puritans to successfully establish a colony; these same morals and principals had a profound impact on the New England colonies in a similar way as well.…

Throughout all of history and even today, religion has played a major role in the lives of many people and society in general. A time in history where this is prevalent is in the 17th and 18th centuries; the colonization and the building the original 13 colonies. In fact, religion played such an important role in the colonies that religion was sometimes the stem of inner conflict in the colonies. However, on the same hand, religion also had a way of being common ground among the colonists. Religion united the colonists when all were free to worship what faith they wanted and how they wanted to worship and a direct result of this religious freedom was emerging political ideas;however, when religious intolerance, or concern for only one particular…

In the 1600’s, the New England colony devolved very rapidly. The political, economic, and social development of the colonies was highly influenced by the Puritans, who helped find most of the colonies in the region after emigrating there from England. The Puritans strict values and ideas helped shape the colonies greatly in several ways. They believed in a representative government which later on became an essential part of the United States’ government. Economically, the idea of fair priced goods also came from the Puritans. Strict values in church, religion, and community were all Puritan customs that helped social development in the 1600’s.…

The Puritans had a huge impact on the way the New England region developed. The Puritans had a religious leader, John Winthrop who became governor and their political leader as well. As a result, in the colony, religion and politics were the same. Laws came from religious ways and beliefs. An example is when Anne Hutchinson was against some beliefs of the Puritans, saying that God had a personal relationship with people who were not in politics or church, and that God’s favor and love were stronger than laws, they kicked her out of the colony. Her followers were “those against the law” – Antinomians. To repeat, the state did not allow her beliefs, because it was the same as the Puritan church. This relationship between the church and religion was becoming a bigger and bigger problem and because of that, Roger Williams wanted to separate the church and the state. Roger Williams established Rhode Island colony, and it was the first one to separate the state and the Church. Because of this separation of religion and politics, people were now able to practice, in any colony, their beliefs, which, as a result was used in the Constitution of the United States of America. So this union between the church and government shows the strong influence of religion on the development of…

They Puritans goal in instituting their religion was to purify Christianity. It is unlikely that they realized just how influential they would be on New England culture in the years to come. Though many Americans might not enjoy this fact, the social and religious ideas that the Puritans held were essential in the shaping of New England colonies. The ways in which the Puritans socially, economically, and politically applied their religion into daily life greatly changed all the people of New England, for better or for worse. This is proven in how people reacted to their strict rules, the Puritan relations with the Native Americans, and in general their church centered society.…
