English Reflection #1- The American Dream
Describe what The American Dream is to you in twelve sentences.
A common way to describe The American Dream is to point out the traditional social ideals of the United States, such as equality, democracy, and material prosperity. However, to me personally, the American Dream is more than just making a lot of money and buying a huge home.
If I had to describe the American Dream, I would say it’s composed of five essential things: owning a home, raising a family, getting a good education, the ability to live comfortably with a few luxuries along the way, and most importantly, always being happy.
While most 20-somethings start out in apartments, it would be nice to eventually be able to purchase my own home that I can raise a family in. I’ve always wanted to be a Mom, and I think it would be nice if my children could have a place to come back to after they’ve gone out on their own that’s full of good memories. Possibly most important in the near future for me would be getting a good education. While I’m still unsure of “what I want to be when I grow up”, I think it’s important to have an education to fall back on that can assure me a good career later on in life. To go along with my career, I would hope that I’d be able to live a comfortable life in terms of finances. The dream is to be able to live in a nice suburban home or maybe even a really nice apartment in the city high above the streets (even though the two are almost opposite of each other) with my husband and child(ren), and drive a luxury car. A vacation once or twice a year would be great. More than anything else, though, I just want to always stay happy, because happiness goes a long way.
