William Blake uses the role of nature as an expression of the divine in “The Lamb” and “The Tyger.” Blake was a Christian visionary poet of the 1700’s. In his work he depicts both sides of the divine, the good represented as the pure creation of God in a lamb and the evil represented as another perfect creation in the form of a malevolent creature, the tiger. Blake’s intentions are to demonstrate how God is a divine force, the creator of both “good” and “evil.” The opposite roles of nature as depicted in “The lamb” and “The Tyger” are illustrated by the use of imagery and descriptive language.
First of all, in “The Lamb,” William Blake describes the lamb as a beautiful, delicate, and peaceful creation. The narrator says, “Gave thee clothing of delight, softest clothing, woolly, bright” (Blake 891). Here, he illustrates through descriptive language the lamb’s characteristics and beauty. In addition to this, he uses the words “Gave thee such a tender voice, making all the vales rejoice” (Blake 891) to create the image of the little lamb delicacy describing the tenderness of her voice enjoyed in the valleys. Finally, the narrator says, “He is meek, and he is mild He became a little child” -and- “I a child, and thou a lamb” (Blake 891). Here, Blake exposes the fact that the lamb is a harmless, peaceful creature by personifying god in a lamb and explaining the true origin and symbolism of such a glorifying creature.
In contrast, in his poem “The Tyger,” Blake describes a totally opposite creature; a strong, fearful and harsh tiger with a perfect shape and form. To begin, there is the first line of the poem: “Tyger, Tyger! burning bright in the forests of the night” (Blake 892). This is intended to show the brighten power and strength of the tiger that stands in the lone and darker forests.     In the first part of the poem, the child is asking the lamb about his origin while the second part is a kind of answer provided from the same child. With his innocent voice the child says: "Little Lamb who made thee/ Dost thou know who made thee." He builds up a series of questions, also characterizes and praises the Lamb. He creates a bright and pure picture of it. There are images of the lamb that lifts this creature up into divine spheres: it has the clothing of delight, the softest wooly bright, and a tender voice. The closing lines of this stanza are the repetition of the first two lines, which tensifies the mood of the poem, emphasizing the unknown origin of the lamb. The second stanza starts with a kind of suggestion, a kind of hope concerning the creator of the lamb. The narrator talks as if he would know the answer for the child's questions: "Little lamb I'll tell thee,/ Little lamb I'll tell thee!" Blake then states that the lamb's creator is the lamb itself. In fact, this little mild creature could be no one than Jesus Christ, himself. As we go on reading the poem, Blake makes it clear that the poem's point of view is that of a child when he says "I a child and thou a lamb." It is a child's curiosity that raises the question in our minds, as well, about the creator of the lamb and about everything that is beautiful and divine.     During the time the “Tyger” was written, William Blake deemed the world to be very unstable, as there was a shift into the industrial revolution, and many writers such as William Blake looked to literature to have a focus on inspiration and the individual. The speaker in the poem looks to the animal as a companion and a dominant figure in the world: “Tyger Tyger burning bright in the forests of the night.” (Blake 1-2). This verse is showing how the tiger appears to have some sort of force in the natural world, as it seems to be a very powerful and stable animal.     William Blake is inspired to write this poem in which the central purpose or theme is to identify who the Lamb is and its origins, by formulating a series of questions, and to describe its characteristics and personality by portraying its awesome attributes. The World English Dictionary defines Lamb as: “1. A young, immature sheep, especially under a year old and without permanent teeth; 2. Somebody who is meek, gentle, and mild, especially a baby or a small child; 3. Someone who is easily deceived or cheated; 4. Like a Lamb to the slaughter calmly and without resistance going to face something unpleasant or dangerous.” It is clearly noted by the author’s figurative language that the poem is symbolic and allegoric—having the Lamb’s description a second meaning beneath the surface one, conveying connotations beyond what is expressed, and an ulterior meaning as major interest. “Little Lamb who made thee?     In this particular stanza there is a strong sense of mystery that is conveyed to the reader. The chant “Tyger! Tyger!” puts the reader in a situation where the mystery of the chant is a prevalent. The use of the phrase “Fearful Symmetry” is phrase that brings forth a sense of mystery while adding an eerie feeling to the piece.     A lamb is a gentle and meek creature that is both daring and submissive. A lamb is very much like a child.
