A Windshield Survey is the data collected as the observer drives through a community/neighborhood for an observational assessment of the community. This type of survey reveals such things as community resources, safety or “walk-ability” of the community, type of social interactions, and community values through symbols such as graffiti, billboards, home maintenance etc. It is a composite of data collected through personal observation. Theses observations assist the community health nurse to identify objective data that may help identify trends, problems, needs, structures, processes, and status elements to determine the health of the community. This information can be analyzed against the components of Healthy Cities.
1. PLACE
A. Boundaries: Where is the community located? What are the boundaries-natural or man made?
B. Where is the major health facilities located?
C. What health care facilities are necessary for the community but are not located within the community?
D. Is there easy access to health facilities?
E. Are there any geographic features, plants, or animals that may harm the community?
F. Are there ample schools? Are they in good repair, disrepair, overcrowded?
G. Is public protection evident such as police, fire, EMS?
2. PEOPLE:
A. Who is on the street? How are they dressed? What are they doing?
B. What is the origin, ethnicity, or race of the people?
C. How are the different groups residentially located?
D. What evidence do you see of racial and or ethnic characteristics of the people? (Food stores, churches, private schools, information in a language other than English?)
E. What denomination are the churches?
F. How would you categorize the socioeconomic status of the
