"Changing attitudes in Britain Society towards women was the major reason why some women received the vote in 1918". How accurate is this view?…
The industrial revolution and a population boom marked the 1800’s in England. Many people moved to North America or Australia to escape the crowdedness. Infant mortality was high, so people would often have bigger families accepting that some would not make it to adulthood. To be middle class, one must have at least one servant. “Service” was the biggest employer of women.…
For centuries, society defined women using their generational stereotypes. According to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, the woman’s social status progression and digression needs to be investigated. Her book, “Good Wives”, expands on what societal stereotypes created the ideal women in 17th and 18th century New England. Ulrich approached the topic with a virtually unbiased opinion and attempted to explore all socio-economic classes to relay deeper understanding of pre-modern gender roles.…
During the 1900’s women’s main purpose was to get married and look after her husband and children, they were treated as second class citizens with few rights. Women were burdened with heavy duty unpaid domestic work within the home. Life for women then consisted of backbreaking housework, without electricity and household aids. Young girls were expected to help with household chores even when they were in full time employment, whilst young boys were exempt from such chores.[1]…
Growing distinction between workplace and home led to distinction in societal roles of men and women. Women had long been denied legal and political rights, little access to business, less access to education at high…
Document A: George Henry Evans wrote the document to represent the working class men. In the document, Evans argues that the working class should have the same rights as other classes. He even quotes a part of the Declaration of Independence to support his argument. At the time, the democrats deprived the working class men from their rights, and they abused the working class men instead of protecting their rights. It was during the first year of Jackson’s presidency that the working class organized their own party to defend their rights. When Jackson became president, he attempted to protect the working class men’s equality of economic opportunity. The working class even received the right to vote. Jackson became known as a true democrat and a protector of the common man because of all he had done for the working class. This document is an example of political democracy.…
Starting off by explaining the typical family roles in the turn of the century, Piess expresses how while the men may spend his evenings at a local saloon, at a baseball game or reading his daily paper, the women would often be expected to work her “double day”. Piess explains this concept of the double day to be that the woman is expected to go about her daily work day of typically “domestic servants, needlewomen, laundresses…” (Peiss 1986), and come home to start her other job, being the housewife. The housewife duties usually entailed cooking, cleaning, washing, scrubbing, and most importantly… making her husband and kids happy. All the while, when the woman got her hard earned paycheck, it was expected to go towards family needs. Even as young women in the family home, young working girls were expected to hand over their paychecks in their entirety while their male counterparts were only asked for a small portion of their earnings. Even though women were getting paid at lower wages and it being justified because women were seen as “temporary wage-earners who worked only until marriage” (Peiss 1986), Piess automatically…

One should completely dispose the first amendment when comparing the upper and lower classes. The first amendment basically states that everyman is equal, regardless of financial state. However, this amendment is bent constantly throughout present day as there is an obvious difference between upper class and lower class. The stereotypical upper class member of society is simply brought up with more luxuries and resources than that of a lower class gender. The generic upper class child is born into a wealthy, happy, normal, and indifferent environment, where taking risks is kept at a minimal and they are provided with virtually anything they want. In addition, the generic upper class child is brought up with many educational luxuries. They blossom from the popup books in the toddler days to complex pieces of literature in the college days. The basic lower class child is the polar opposite of the everyday upper class child. He/she is usually born into a poor, difficult, melancholy, and unstable environment. Even though all lower class people may not be melancholy, it is very hard to find happiness in the amount of life problems and risks they must deal with daily. Purchasing a popup book may not even be possible at times and sacrificing certain possessions to get that popup may be the only option. Also, the lower class child usually attends a day care, not a preschool, and this can lead to further inequalities in class. “Some enter kindergarten not knowing how to hold pencils” (Rothstein). College is simply unrealistic for these poor children due to their economically and racially segregated neighborhoods. The lower class simply has minimal first amendment rights due to their financial state of being. It is more obvious than a sore thumb; the upper class is superior to the lower class in many different aspects of life. The stereotypical upper class member has more privileges, more rights, and all around more power than the average lower class member. It is sad, but…

Our text explains these are the sets of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex.…
Everyone is born in a specific social class, that being, we have no choice to choose our own social class from birth. Unless members of the family are able to change their social status, it’s more likely to remain in the same class. Social class is an important factor we have as an individual because depending on the social class, we are able to experience in a wide variety of opportunities to no opportunities. Lower class family were classified to be unstable, reduce marriage options, (Lower class person seeking for it’s opponent with higher class for secure reasons), and overall, it’s all about surviving than experimenting and taking adventures. Follows up with the working class and then then the middle class, while the working class is still…
Socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity and gender play a huge influence on health status as it subconsciously influences the way physicians interacts with patients, the sort of treatment patients receive at hospitals, and how their health is overall based on how society influences them. The main trends noticed throughout time is that the lower your socioeconomic status is, the poorer your health status is; if you are African-American, Hispanics, etc… receive poorer treatments because of the stereotypes toward their ethnicity in society and because these races tend to have lower SES than other races; for gender, men tend to take on riskier careers in comparison to women so they tend to die earlier and visit the hospital more often while women tend to take better care of themselves and seek medical treatment more often than…
The social structure of Britain has been highly influenced by the concept of social class. In sociology, the term ‘social class’ is most often used to refer to the primary system of social stratification found in modern capitalist societies. Social stratification refers to ‘the presence [in society] of distinct social groups which are ranked one above the other in terms of factors such as prestige and wealth’.…
As time has passed, the middle class population in America is beginning to diminish due to the decrease of jobs. One of the most appalling things in society is that “more than half of families in the United States earn $60,000 or less per year” (Harris, 1). Because more than half of American families are earning less income than they should, Americans living in poverty has escalated. A majority of Americans strives to acquire a sufficient amount of money on part-time and temp jobs while prices and massive taxes placed on the the middle class accumulates. The middle class incomes are declining, slowly dragging the middle class down to poverty and as a result, the middle class is rapidly dwindling. For the sake of resolving this complication, society must be obliged to provide more good paying jobs to ensure that every American has enough income to support their families.…
It is no secret that for centuries, women have faced years and years of discrimination, inferiority to men, and being viewed as less than human by society. Women have had to fight for their right to vote amongst other legal rights, and for their independence from their husbands. “When American women began to enter the labor force in the nineteenth century, the relatively few jobs open to them were highly segregated by gender” (Spain 1992: 14). The first women’s labor union began to form by the end of the 1930’s. Women’s activism began to increase, leading to a new reform in paid work and the rise in feminism in the midst of a new labor movement (Gregory 2003: 25). By the 1940’s, the transition of the housewife to that of a working woman began to trend. Women began to venture out of the home in search of employment and educational opportunities to help provide for their families, since their…
