“For communication to occur, the reader must be on the same page as the author in terms of genre” (Hays, 2008, p. 64). Considering literary genre of text is crucial to proper interpretation. This is very important to consider when reading scripture because this could lead to complete misunderstanding of God’s Word. Literary genre is work like a set of instructions to reading text, because you wouldn’t read an instruction manual the same way you would read a letter (Hays, 2008, p. 65). “The form or genre of the text really is connected to the content of the text, and for this reason, we should take literary genre seriously (Hays, 2008, p. 65).…

In his book “How to Read Literature Like a Professor,” Thomas C. Foster elucidates that many authors use well known literature to base their own works off of. The Bible counts as one of these well used works. Authors may borrow Biblical symbols and stories to use in their own work to deepen its meaning or provide something to help the readers to draw parallels and comprehend the story better. Or perhaps, as Foster words it, “maybe a writer doesn’t want enriching motifs, characters, themes, or plots, but just needs a title. The Bible is full of possible titles.” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, titled “Young Goodman Brown,” exhibits a few easy to spot Biblical references. Goodman Brown leaves his home to walk down a path with a figure who…
There are many examples of New Testament writers utilizing Jewish interpretation, such as the Targums, and Greek rhetorical styles to compose their documents and letters. As James Gregory states, “Authors of the New Testament were Jewish and did utilize Jewish exegetical methods, they also used Greek rhetorical features when composing their documents” (Gregory). Some examples of Greek rhetoric include, “the Sermon on the Mount…deliberative, Jesus’ speech and prayer in John 13-17…epideictic, and 2nd Corinthians…forensic” (Gregory). This means that New Testament writers explained how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament storyline as well as used the common persuasion methods of the their day. For example, Jewish interpretation and Greek rhetoric can be found in the way Luke writes his Gospel and the book of Acts. In both instances, Luke relies heavily on connecting…

Taylor’s poem used descriptive language because he was using an extended metaphor to describe what he wants God to make him. Lastly, Edward’s poem used persuasive language because he was trying to persuade his audience to turn back to God and the normal Puritan teachings/ways. By looking at the language used, a person can also see the purpose of the poem. Bradstreet’s poem was more narrative and telling about how amazing God’s forgiveness is. Taylor’s poem was a description of how he wanted God to make him into a tool. Edwards’ sermon was trying to persuade his crowd to turn their beliefs back to Puritanism. They all used different tones to accomplish their goals. Bradstreet used a soft tone. Taylor used a descriptive tone to describe how he wants God to make him a better person. Edwards uses a startling tone because he was telling his audience that most, if not all, of them will go to hell. The biggest thing to understand from these three pieces of literature is that they are all very different though they are all pieces of the same type of Puritan…

When reading the Bible and carefully reading the surrounding context of a passage, but ignoring it’s literary genre will often lead to misinterpretation, misguided, and normally missed messages. The words in the Bible are intended to help, inspire, guide, and teach us about the goodness of God. We must be able to connect with the author to gain the full benefits of his message. As Duvall and Hayes (2008) states, “To disregard literary genre in the Bible is to violate our covenant with the biblical author and with the Holy Spirit who inspired his message.” (p. 65) To do otherwise would be just reading words on the paper.…
