Yolanda enjoys reading and writing poetry. When in school, she is chosen to write a speech and present to the rest of her school. The speech she writes is inspired with Walt Whitman and expresses subordination and that students should learn from their teachers but also rise above them and evolve which makes her father upset and he rips the speech into pieces. This shows how Yolanda is split between the American and the Dominican culture. She is trying to form an American identity and to express it but is held back by her father and the Dominican traditions. This split in Yolanda's personality is also shown in the chapter where the story of Rudy Elmenhurst is told. The world is full of writers of all kinds: novelists, biographers, copy writers, and even bloggers. Every so often, one of those writers will rise above the rest and become a great author—but what exactly does that take? She opens with a chapter labeled, “First Thoughts,” which advocates letting go of all of one’s ego and inhibition. “We must trust in our own process and voice,” she insists.…
Even though she was hesitant, she potentially regarded her cousin as being in a more powerful status. Also, Yolanda was used to being submitted to her father, as well as to other men in the house, constantly. Yet, Yolanda’s desire to become separated from the Dominican standards for women was revealed from a bold speech she wrote for school: “That night, at last, she started to write, recklessly, three, five pages, looking up once only to see her father passing by the hall on tiptoe” (Alvarez 142). After completing the speech, she “read over her words, and her eyes filled”, feeling like she “finally sounded like herself in English!” (Alvarez 143). This was how Yolanda established her new “self” according to American value. Instead of accepting her father’s suggestion to praise the teachers, Yolanda composed an article with inspiration from a Whitman’s poem.
