Z for Zachariah
The main character, Ann, in “Z For Zachariah” by Robert C. O’Brien, is a dynamic character. At the beginning of the story, Ann hated being alone in a valley after a nuclear war. Ann has lived in a cave, with some supplies, ever since. She is desperate. Everyday she would pray and hope for someone to come so that she would not have to be alone. "At first when all the others went away, I hated being alone, and I watched the road all day and most of the night hoping that a car, anybody, would come over the hill from either direction" (O’Brien, pg 5) This support shows that Ann is hoping for someone to come because she is lonely and she wants someone to be with her. A person that is alone surely desires to have someone be with the or for them to come. It is obvious that this quote shows that Ann wants someone to come to her or in her direction. However, towards the end of the book Ann starts to regret ever wishing for someone to come to her. She has sort-of has become rivals with the man who came to the valley, Mr.John Loomis. “ I knew then that I could not stay in the valley any longer. I was too sad and angry and did not want to think of Mr. Loomis or see him again” (pg 237). It is crystal clear that Ann, at the end of the story, never wants to see Mr. Loomis again because of his creepy personality. He has controlled and abused Ann in several ways. He made her do all the chores in the field and other places. Mr. Loomis has controlled her ever since he recovered from his sickness. A person creeped out ,by another person wishes to never see that person again. Throughout the story Ann was a very brave person and stayed strong even when she was in a situation. At the beginning of the story she hoped and watched for someone to come and when the man , Mr. Loomis, comes she had seconds thoughts about him the more she got to know him. So, as you can see, Ann is a dynamic character.

Before Eugene moved to the house next to El Building (the building in which Elena lives), there was an old Jewish couple that lived there. She would watch the couple on a fire escape. She felt as if she had a very close connection to them. “Over the years I had become part of their family, without their knowing it of course” (Cofer, 6). She knew what they did and when they did it. As the husband died, the wife became a widow and the house had stood empty for weeks. When she grew a connection with the old Jewish couple, she grew a connection with the ominous hose she had been watching all summer. As Eugene and his family moved into the house, Elena would still go to the fire escape and just watch. After watching him, she thought, “I liked him right away because he sat at the kitchen table and read books for hours” (Cofer, 7). Eugene and Elena would both get bullied at school; they were both outsiders together. This did not stop Elena from liking Eugene. “But after meeting Eugene I began to think of the present more than the future. They would periodically walk home together to the point where Eugene wanted Elena to come over his house and study one day, the day of President John F. Kennedy’s death.…

    1. After seven years of ever-lurking silence Ann does something she soon regrets. At the end of the story Ann says, “If you knew him though- John would try” (p. 7). So did Ann really know John? I think Ann did know John and she knew that he would come home like he always did. But I think she let herself believe what Steven continued to say which was no one would risk coming home in such a bad storm. Ann always had feelings for Steven, but they were all for the wrong reasons. So I think her act with Steven was her defiance of seven years of ‘ever-lurking silence’ with John. Ann always felt alone with John and I think she thought Steven could give her more than what John had given her, but soon after her act with Steven she realized she was wrong. Ann realized John was a man and there was nothing Steven could give her that John wouldn’t, but by the time Ann realized this it was too late.…

Let’s switch roles Azaire, at least try to imagine a miniscule part of what I’m going through. How would you feel if everywhere you looked, blood of soldiers were dispersed through the air, as they were pulverized from the blasts. Men around me begging for death, in slow, silent chants. Anticipating every moment in case the earth falls in and crushes you, leaving you to witness a slow and painful death. Looking up at the last ‘beautiful’ scenery, is the sky of metal artillery, before waiting for what could be your last moments of in the trenches, this is what you should be living, you out of all men deserve this. Having every freedom as a man you decided to abuse, a pure woman, is it her fault she cannot conceive. Every part of me misses her Azaire; i turn numb when I think of her, within this state and place she is always in my mind, my only motivation. This is a letter to you to fathom what real love consists of. Everything I yearn for is, Isabelle. You have mere significance to a vulture, having seen many of them peck away at the dead corpses on the battlefield so shrewdly, there is also darkness to your soul, but you could be capable to love. This is what you failed to express to Isabelle. Still reminiscing over the first time her beauty caught me, she was there in front of me her strawberry chestnut hair, caught and held up off her face so elegantly, she wore a white lace blouse with a dark red stone which met at her throat. Her eyes glistened; there was so much beneath the…

One man seeks as much love as he can receive, the other wants a long life. The old woman tells them of her life story and her promiscuity is evident. At the very young age of eleven, this woman began to have sensual desires. She met a samurai who worked for an aristocrat. She thought he was different from all the other men who sent her letters; she said “he was of low rank and wasn’t good looking, but his writing, sent me into another world”(Puchner et al.595). She managed to meet him but was eventually caught and she was merely fired but the man lost his life for their relations. She acted as though this incident had a great effect on her. Her words made that hard to believe: “But the days went by, and you know, I completely forgot about that man” (Puchner et al.595). In the end, the old woman expresses what seems to be shame for her life’s experiences. She says “I just followed my desires wherever they went—and I ruined myself…I certainly have managed to live a long time, but my life, well, it wasn’t what you’d call exemplary”(Puchner et al.596).…
