I am increasingly aware of the responsibility that comes with a job in teaching. My conscious and unconscious action may have important long term effects for the young people I teach. Many of my students are impressionable or have been turned off education by unprofessional teaching. It is important to me that I relate to the people in my class whilst remaining professional. I am a Personal Tutor to twenty students. This involves advising my learners in various areas. Life skills, future career prospects, personal matters and, of course, the subject I teach. I believe myself to be a fair and unprejudiced person but I have welcomed the opportunity to ratify this with Equality and Diversity and Personal tutor training (see Appendix C).

As well as supporting an understanding of appropriate behaviour and demonstrating respect for each other it is also essential in ensuring each student is able to get the most out of the learning opportunity. As a tutor you have a key role in ensuring support needs of students are identified and met. A good understanding of equality and diversity, including the nine protected characteristics and types of discrimination covered, will help to avoid litigation under the Equalities Act 2010 and ensure compliance with Ofsted’s Common Inspection Framework. These two levels are very different, and must be approached by those delivering the learning with awareness of the altered factors.
