Among the major differences between the two essays is the way they are structured. In the essay “How…
I read “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria” by Beverly Daniel Tatum and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. I choose both essays due to the fact that they were the first two in the prescribed reading of our text for this week. I have come to realize that I am just not attracted to any of our readings from our text, and just working my way through them seems to be working. I will say that each essay so far, has left me somewhat surprised, as far as gaining incites on issues and topics that I never would have received, if left to my own intentions.…
Laughter is something that pleases the mind. Throughout our entire lives, we search for things that make us feel, even for the slightest amount of time, happy. Billy Collins writes, “Chalk dust flurrying down in winter, / nights dark as a blackboard” (Page 535). He is referring to happy times as a teenager. Being more than happy when the snow comes and school is out. Having nothing but time to be out of the house at all times of the night. Through conscious decisions, we forget about life. Sometimes even forgetting about the future.…
“Humor appear’s to help people’s psychological and physical well being.” It says in Peter McGraw’s essay “The Importance of Humor Research.” It has been proven that it is good for your body to react in such a way to a funny situation but the psychological portion of it is hard to understand. When someone laughs, endorphins are released from the brain and are sent throughout the body creating the feeling of pleasure. It is a healthy alternative to any negative situation, whether it be negative or awkward it can be made easier with a joke here or…
Both essays give a better understanding on why we make the choices that we make and how things effect us. Both essays…
In the stories Don’t Give Up The Fight and Making Sarah Cry The both share a theme of being different. In Don’t Give Up The Fight Ava is different because all the people on her team are boys and she is the only girl. In the story Making Sarah Cry Sarah gets made fun because she looks different than everyone else. Even though these stories share a common theme of being different they are two completely different stories. For example the characters in the story handled their situations differently.…
Oftentimes, people say that laughter is the best medicine. Sure—laughter can cure bad days, and hard times, but laughter is not the only way that we can cope with problems. We as human beings go through many emotions, and as you can tell, laughter is only one of them. When people face tough situations, their reaction to the episode can be with tears, laughter, or both.…
Sarah states that laughter is beneficial to health because it relieves stress and helps one socially. Information from another article Laughter is the Best Medicine concurs with what is being said. " Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. ....Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert" (Smith, Segal). She gives physical and mental effects of laughter such as decreased risk of heart attack, increase pain tolerance, increased intelligence, production of antibodies and protective cells that fight off disease and infections. Smith and Segal created charts, shown in fig 1, with lists that include benefits of laughter that Sarah mentions and more. In the article The Health Benefits of Laughter similar benefits are also mentioned: "research shows that when you laugh, there is an increase in oxygen-rich blood flow in your body, possibly due to the release of endorphins, which create a chemical rush that counters negative feelings and stress"(…
Both authors understand the importance of having a purpose for the story, as well as having a technique that helps the point come across to the reader. This makes their stories have a greater impact and makes it have more meaning to the audience. It proved effective in helping the movement towards less discrimination towards women and blacks. The repetitiveness is used in different ways in the two stories, but the thing they have in common is that it helps get the point across to the reader. This makes the story more relatable to the readers and this makes it something that is lasting with the reader. This would make the story more effective at obtaining its…
Vonnegut prescribes laughter for all things, for without laughter life would seem a lot more painful. “Humor is a way of holding off how awful life can be, to protect yourself,” states Vonnegut (129.) To go on and live life you need to be able to laugh at your mistakes, just as to continue believing in a political system you need to be able to laugh at its faults. He also believes that at some point humor becomes less of a shield against the harsh truth of life and politics. He says, “Finally, you get just too tired, and the news is too awful, and humor doesn’t work anymore” (129.) It would seem with age the seriousness of things out-weighs the humor that can be found in them.…
In conclusion both essays are good, but that is the one I would recommend. The one bad thing about it is that it is from one women’s perspective. One situation does not speak for everyone. However it does speak for the majority. So it would help many couples in marriage…
In America, every four years there is a presidential election that gives Americans the right to vote. The United States is a role model to other countries of the concept of giving all citizens equal share in the government and the way it is run. The Electoral College ruins the voting and creates an unfair system that is not equal. It destroys the fundamental part of democracy that gives everyone the right to vote. The Electoral College raises the question "Is the United States a republic?". With the Electoral College, it is a winner take all system which makes some votes practically useless. The founding fathers believed that most people were uneducated and would make uninformed decisions and the way news travel has changed. With this system,…
During the first week of class we discussed the roll of advertisements and marketing in today’s society. The readings that were covered were Illusions are Forever by Jay Chiat and Champagne Taste, Beer Budget by Delia Cleveland.…
A humorous story is a comedy. A serious story is a drama. Put both of these kinds of stories together and you get Flannery O'Connor's writing style. O'Connor's short stories begin with an up beat tone, and then slowly trickle into a more serious, dramatical tone. This style of writing is what helped O'Connor's stories stick in our minds from her death until now. Her short stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find", "Revelation", and "Good Country People" are good examples of her writing in this manor. Each of these stories starts off with a humorous theme, and then gets serious towards the end to get its point across. With this style of writing, one can pin point the irony in her stories. Where her stories switch from humorous to dramatical is where the story's irony and climax appear, and with that sudden change of tone it brings out the climax from the rest of the story. At that moment, a reader should be able to identify the theme O'Connor is trying to push across. The two different tones also serve a purpose to the characters in the story. The humorous tone tells the reader what type of character they are, and what to expect from them later in the story. The more humor in the story the more we learn about the characters actions. When the tone gets serious, one sees the personality traits established at the beginning of the story take action. That why the humor always comes first, so that it can explain the character's action later in the story, when the tone gets serious.…
In “It Would Be Different” by Maggie Mitchell and “The First Year of my Life” by Muriel Sparks there are many similarities, as there are differences. In comparing these two short stories, we are at realization of the similarities in discussing the present and the past flashbacks described. The summarization in “It Would Be Different” talks about a girl named Nikki who is delusional and imagining a world with her ex-boyfriend that isn’t true, she has this obsession with her ex-boyfriend. She says in the first paragraph “Here’s what I remember. If I could hate you, this is what I would hate you for”. Nikki doesn’t remember much of what happened because she’s delusional when it comes to her ex-boyfriend. “She’s always around. She annoys me, but I don’t suspect anything yet” (1). It’s hard for Nikki to understand that Jeff has moved on. She’s still lives in the same area as she was living in when she was together with Jeff. “It would be different if we lived in the kind of place where people can disappear, never see each other again. It would be different if I could pretend you didn’t exist but there you are” (4). Nikki can’t get over Jeff, and seeing him everywhere doesn’t help her illness of being obsessed with him. She stalks not only Jeff but his current girlfriend. “What are you thinking of? You’re everywhere. I think you have ruined my life” (4). Nikki is ruining her own life by constantly obsessing over her ex-boyfriend and his current life now. Thinking about Jeff and thinking how their life was supposed to be is the reason why she feels he ruined her life. Instead of being with her he chose someone else which is driving her insane.…
