On Film Romeo And Juliet (version of 1968)
—Analysis of How Light And Shadow To Perform Emotion And Create Atmosphere In The Film
Student 林广雪 Student No. 2010300340088 Film Romeo and Juliet, version of 1968, was famous for its sophisticated production and special casting. However, compared with the black-white version of 1952, the director had better condition to create better visual effect in color version of 1968. Light and shadow was important element to complete that visual feast. Light is the foundation of film. Because of light, we can see a film at home or in a movie theatre. Excellent directors can use light to create a proper scene or effect to resonate audiences successfully. To be an indispensable element to film, light can present various effects flexibly and manage to deliver different information by creating different effect. In Romeo and Juliet, the version of 1968, light plays an important role to help this movie become a successful one. Director technically used sunshine, moonlight, flame, and shadow to create different emotion and atmosphere. However, it is hard to describe and analyze all of them here. I will analyze what effect light helps to create and how it manages to by quoting typical scenery from the film. Firstly, the different presentations of light and shadow help to modeling figure’s image at film. For instance, when prince appeared and stopped the fight, his guards and he came from the shadow, fast and deterrent. The bright and gold sunshine shone on his face, which made his face became too gold to stare on. With the close-up shot, we feel like to look up to him and we saw a picture of hierarch. (from 6’25’’ of the film) Director successfully emphasized prince’s power and authority with the gold sunshine. Benvolio, who died in the fight with the Capulet, was telling his illusive story in the crowd. Bright and dancing flame of the torches burned before him. It’s a picture of magic and fantasy. We can feel the passion and

Most noticeably, the use of dark lighting exemplifies the importance of relationships. In Edward Scissorhands, Edward was in a dark castle and was lonely until Peg takes him to her bright and lively house. The dark lighting showed Edward’s loneliness, however, the bright lighting of the town and Peg’s house showed how he was able to create a relationship with the town’s people, which he was unable to do previously in the tower. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka did not have a good relationship with his father, so the flashbacks of his childhood are in a darker light. The dark lighting in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands stresses the importance of relationships.…

For example in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” from the outside the factory looks very dark and dreary because of the dark lighting that Tim uses but once you open the door you see this bright and colorful land of candy that wouldn’t look as desirable if it didn’t have the bright lighting. Although in “big fish” everything was very dark because he was trying to create a mood of sadness for the dad dying except in the end when the dad turned into a fish. In “Edward scissorhands” the lighting around Edward’s house is very dark up until you actually get to the house then its light and whimsical to show that everyone thinks he’s so scary but really he’s a pretty cool guy that is just lonely and isolated and has never experienced the outside…

For example, in the popular movie by Tim Burton,”Big Fish”, it contained two scenes with a dramatic difference. That difference was the lighting. The first scene that was played showed the spectrum with beautiful grass and polished buildings, the mood was obviously exciting and cheery. The lightning showed me that since the scene was very bright. However, the second scene which showed Edward walking back to the spectrum and him being surprised for the reason that the grass was dead and the once architecturally detailed buildings were now at their ends. The lighting (dark) had an extra effect of making the scene sorrowful. In another case, Edward Bloom’s room was very dark and encouraged how Edward could be many seconds away from dieing. Lastly, the movie, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, when all the kids and parents continued walking in the factory, following Willie, I noticed the lighting slowly get brighter while they walked into the room with the chocolate river, which made me feel less stressed since the kids were about to have great entertainment in that…

Light imagery is a very important aspect of Romeo and Juliet. There are many references to light and dark in the children's relationship. The light imagery is a recurring theme in the story. It is very important in setting the mood in their relationship. The depiction of light and dark is often jumbled in the story. Sometimes light is good and dark is bad, and more often it is the other way around.…

Shakespeare uses a variety of techniques in Romeo and Juliet in order to enhance the reader’s experience and to communicate messages through his work. For instance, the use of celestial imagery contributes to the tragic tone of the play, because it suggests the inevitable end to the main characters. Notably in the opening of the play, the reader hears: “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” (I.Prologue.6). Likewise, before Romeo enters the Capulet party he tells his friends: “I fear, too early; for my mind misgives/ Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,/ Shall bitterly begin with this sweet date/ Of a despised life, closed in my breast,/ By some vile forfeit of untimely death. (I.iv.116-121). Celestial imagery is a form of author’s craft that uses the…

Throughout the play "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare, the author uses light or the absence of light to enhance and/or contribute to the mood of a particular scene. As viewers watch Romeo and Juliet fall in love, the obstacles that complicate their unfair love become very obvious. Shakespeare uses light and dark images to add to the mood of his play. Usually in text and stories from the beginning of time, to modern-day, light would correspond with good, and dark with evil. Shakespeare on the other hand would often make dark imagery have a positive impact and light have a negative impact to add more visual depth depending on the scene and mood.…

A theme that is central to the play is love. Shakespeare reveals the love of Romeo and Juliet throughout the play. Shakespeare uses phrases like “O speak again, bright angel” and “With love light wings did I o’erperch these walls”. To enhance this theme Baz Luhrman uses camera techniques and sound effects. Examples of the camera techniques used are the reflections in the fish tank when Romeo and Juliet first meet. When they are kissing the camera spins around and when they are being pulled away from each other the camera slowly zooms out. Sound effects such as the tracks “Young hearts run free” when going to the Capulet’s ball and “Kissing you” when Romeo and Juliet first meet. These are modern tracks, which have a strong effect on appealing to a modern audience.…

Even through the darkest times in life, there is always light. Moreover, light brightens to overwhelm the darkness. In Night by Elie Wiesel and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, a major conflict exists to which people are killed from their violent and inhuman actions. These conflict last for so long, seeming as if there will never be a resolution. However, the motif of light is presented as the thought to never give up for Eliezer, Romeo, and Juliet, in order to reach their goal of freedom or unity.…

As far as the cinematography came into being, attempts have been made to screen some of the Shakespeare’s plays. Within these screenings ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has always been a graceful and rewarding theme. Rewarding figuratively and literary, as the producers could in fact acquire a great income due to the popularity of the film. Such was the case with the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ directed by Baz Luhrmann and screened in 1996. It earned their creators 46 mln dollars in the first 12 weeks of screening and gained eight prestigious awards, among which were four BAFTA awards, and over a dozen other nominations. What was the secret of this phenomenal success and what would Shakespeare say if he had seen the production? It may be stated that he would be proud.…

    Hamlet Film Analysis

Initially, there is an effective use of a cinematic effect of a filming angle that is present through the course of Hamlet’s speech. For example, during this scene while Hamlet and Ophelia are bickering, the camera captures a mid shot angle (“Shot Types"). This is significant because now that technology is always advancing, people are also learning new techniques about how to productively engage their audience. The use of a mid shot, helps to develop a warm and safe feel to the scene and shows some detail of the actors, this is crucial as it helps the audience to feel comfortable and allows them to speculate the situation (“Shot Types"). Secondly, the lighting for this specific part of the play compliments the audience, the director is targeting. For instance, there are a few lights on the ceiling and wall-mounted fixtures, creating an ambient lighting ("Basic Types Of Lighting"). The importance of this level of brightness is that it develops a sense of comfort and helps the audience understand that although, the young couple is fighting, the lighting suggests that it is just a bump in the road and does not foreshadow that anything fatal is about to happen to one of them. Therefore, the use of the a mid shot camera angle and an ambient lighting successfully conveys whom the film is targeting because in the twenty first…

目前最新的版本是2004年的《残疾个体教育法修正案》(Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act Of 2004)。 [7]…
