CASE CHAD’S CREATIVE CONCEPTS
Chad’s Creative Concepts designs and manufactures wood furniture. Founded by Chad Thomas on the banks of Lake
Erie in Sandusky, Ohio, the company began by producing custom-made wooden furniture for vacation cabins located along the coast of Lake Erie and on nearby Kelly’s
Island and Bass Island. Being an “outdoors” type himself,
Chad Thomas originally wanted to bring “a bit of the outdoors” inside. Chad’s Creative Concepts developed a solid reputation for creative designs and high-quality workmanship. Sales eventually encompassed the entire Great Lakes region. Along with growth came additional opportunities.
Traditionally, the company had focused entirely on custom-made furniture, with the customer specifying the kind of wood from which the piece would be made. As the company’s reputation grew and sales increased, the sales force began selling some of the more popular pieces to retail furniture outlets. This move into retail outlets led
Chad’s Creative Concepts into the production of a more standard line of furniture. Buyers of this line were much more price sensitive and imposed more stringent delivery requirements than did clients for the custom line. Customdesigned furniture, however, continued to dominate sales, accounting for 60 percent of volume and 75 percent of dollar sales. Currently, the company operates a single manufacturing facility in Sandusky, where both custom and standard furniture is manufactured. The equipment is mainly general purpose in nature in order to provide the flexibility needed for producing custom pieces of furniture.
The layout puts together saws in one section of the facility, lathes in another, and so on. The quality of the finished product reflects the quality of the wood chosen and the craftsmanship of individual workers. Both custom and standard furniture compete for processing time on the same equipment by the same

Information Search: The second stage in the furniture purchase process is deciding where to shop. When shopping for furniture, most consumers included multiple stores in their "solution set" – visiting an average of 3.2 stores. Consumers also visited the store where they made their purchase an average of two times prior to making their purchase. Familiarity with a store is paramount to a furniture shopper. We also asked about store uniqueness. While the majority of consumers described furniture stores as at least somewhat different from each other, only one in five described them as very different from each other. Given the fact that consumers are most likely to purchase from stores they have shopped at previously or are already familiar with, relationships with existing customers are critical. In order to bolster those relationships retailers should consider creating loyalty programs to keep customers informed of new items and sales and encourage repeat business. There is a significant opportunity to create awareness among consumers who have never visited your store by clearly communicating overall style and quality of products offered and available price ranges in your advertising.…

Based on my analysis, I think hiring more professional sales representatives is crucial. Since, the costumers value all the points that I have mentioned above, engaging new stuff will help shopping for furniture less stressful. Also, they will be able to inform the client about the quality of the furniture, which is the most important for the client. Lastly, I would recommend creating a sale for new home/condo buyers. Since furniture comes in sets and clients expressed that the same style is essential for them. Advertising a packaging offering in magazine ads will increase the sales. Haverwood Furniture should increase their sales expenditures based on my recommendations.…

The sales and marketing departments affected operations in many ways. When Chad opened the standard furniture to retailers, sales and marketing had to account for the new customers who were more price-sensitive and stringent on delivery times. Sales increased as more standard furniture was being sold to retailers while the reputation also grew. Customized furniture did account for most of the sales, so I believe that overall sales may…

The initiative taken by the sales force to sell to retailers directly impacted the operations at the production facility. Sales and marketing of the standard furniture line put constraints on the staff and equipment at the plant, as they tried to meet the demands of both of the furniture lines. Sales and marketing also impact the delivery times imposed on the processing team. A new production schedule was not implemented with the addition of the standard line. Instead, the custom line receives priority while the standard line is often left waiting at various points in the process. The move to produce standard furniture has left profits lacking. While the company and sales of the standard line continue to grow, the costs of producing the standard line are also increasing. The bulk of volume and sales are still in custom furniture. Money is being held in inventory as parts wait to be…
