He was born into a non- wealthy‚ farming family and was born with the name Lhamo Thondup. At the age of two‚ he was sought out to see if he qualified to be the next Dalai Lama. When he was tested‚ he did in fact qualify and was moved into a Buddhist monastery to begin training for the position of the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
