Germain Henri Hess (August 7‚ 1802–November 30‚ 1850) was a Swiss-born Russian chemist and doctor who formulated Hess’s Law‚ an early principle of thermochemistry. Born in Geneva‚ Switzerland‚ his father was an artist and in 1805 moved the family to Russia to find work. Beginning in 1822‚ Hess studied medicine at the University of Tartu. He qualified as a physician in 1825. Hess turned to chemistry after a meeting with Jöns Jakob Berzelius‚ the famous Swedish chemist‚ and went to Stockholm University

Four years ago‚ I found myself near Sderot‚ Israel‚ along the country’s border with Gaza. Walking with a group of peers‚ we toured the vast landscape before stumbling upon a childcare center. We saw dozens of Palestinian children‚ no older than six‚ with big smiles and filled with laughter. Our gaze followed their movements diligently from behind a chain-linked fence. We watched as some slid down a curved yellow slide‚ while others played on the monkey bars. The sight reminded me of my younger cousins

theory of the experiment is that an object needs an amount of heat for it to change a unit mass by 1 degree in temperature. The objectives of the experiment are to determine the specific heat of metal specimens using the method of mixture‚ to measure the equipment properly‚ to carefully measure the temperature of the equipment‚ to be patient while waiting for the output of the experiment and to be precise in computing for the specific heat of the specimen. Thermochemistry Thermochemistry is the study of heat evolved and absorbed during the chemical reactions. The system is the interest of the universe; the surroundings are the rest of the universe in which the exchange of the energy with the system takes place. Both‚ the system and the surroundings make up the universe. Heat flow is the transfer of heat from a warm place to a cooler one. System to surroundings: Surroundings to system:
Premium Temperature Thermodynamics Heat
- deals with the dynamics of heat and the conversion of heat to work. (car engines. Refrigerators‚ etc) - first law of thermodynamics heat added to a closed system goes into the internal energy of the system and/or doing work - H= delta E1 + W - a heat engine takes heat from a high temperature reservoir‚ converts some to useful work and rejects the remainder to the low temp reservoir. - Second law of thermodynamics - It is impossible for heat to flow spontaneously from a
