Critical Perspective Seminar Project I reviewed a collection of literary criticism on Carver’s Cathedral‚ a collection of short stories written by Carver which was published in 1983. One that stood out to be in particular was James W. Grinnell’s criticism on Carver’s Cathedral works. Grinnell wrote his review in the winter of 1984‚ and went on to say many things about Carver’s work. Grinnell mostly praises Carver’s work and his addition of newer and more creative ideas in his latest work. Grinnell

A cathedral is often where people find comfort and complete tranquility when admiring the beautiful architecture‚ staring at the art that is unfolded in front of their eyes gives people a sense of being part of sometime bigger than just themselves. Raymond Carver’s narrator in his short story “Cathedral” experiences a similar situation when he develops a relationship with a disabled man. Society has shaped many people to believe that a person with a difference is undesirable‚ or unable to fit in

The short story “Cathedral” is an intriguing piece of writing written by Raymond Carver. In this story‚ the author created a character‚ the narrator‚ as a person that lacked warmth or emotional involvement‚ even with his own wife. The blind man is portrayed as a human being with a love for life. He has a human connection towards the narrator’s wife whereby he fully understands her emotions and supports her needs. My essay will explore the use of setting in this short story. My thesis will focus

Being wrong feels the same as being right until you realize that you are wrong‚ and then it can be devastating‚ embarrassing‚ and even funny at times. She called this “error blindness”. At a glance‚ one may conclude that Carver’s “Cathedral” is a simple story‚ but a critical analysis demonstrates that it is the interactions and epiphanies that normal people have that ultimately change their life. The narrator has certain perceptions about the blind people and what happens at the Cathedral and other commonplaces. Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” is a story told by a narrator who has limited awareness of himself and those around him. He wonders how a blind man can have such understanding

I fear this essay may come off a bit choppy due to the fact that while reading “The Cathedral” by Raymond Carver I had a lot of different questions and thoughts running through my head. The first thing I noticed was that the narrator never really uses names and that confused me. Making the story difficult to navigate and raising the question‚ why leave character names a mystery until later? What purpose does it serve? We never learn the names of the narrator‚ the wife or the officer‚ most of the
