Objectives: To use the process of chromatography to separate plant pigments. To compare the plant pigments found in spinach and red leaf lettuce leaves. Hypotheses: I believe the spinach leaf in the acetone will have a higher pigment of chlorophyll a and the red leaf lettuce will have a higher pigment of anthocyanin. I believe the spinach leaf in distilled water will have a higher pigment of chlorophyll a and the red leaf lettuce will have a higher pigment of anthocyanin. Discussion Questions:

Paper Chromatography Chromatography comes from the Greek word khromatos (color) and graphein (to write); i.e. paper chromatography is literally color writing on paper. This method tests the purity of compounds and identifies substances. This analytical process‚ despite having been replaced by the success of thin layer chromatography‚ still stands as a valuable teaching tool‚ and is nevertheless very common. This method is very useful because not only is it a relatively quick process‚ but also

How Chromatography Helps The Human Race Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor (as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates. “Chromatography is done by making of a mixture move past the solids‚ or across the surface of a solid‚ like paper. The mixture is poured onto a solid surface. As the different components of the liquid run down the solid‚ some of them move more slowly than other. A component

Introduction Chromatography is a technique used to separate a mixture into its individual components. In this experiment‚ chromatography is done by using a thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate and filter paper. The word ‘chromatography’ itself means the separation of colours. However‚ nowadays‚ both coloured and colourless compound are used in chromatography by various methods. In chromatography‚ the separation process of mixture is mainly based upon the polarity and molecular weight of sample

on the rate of Photosynthesis in Spinach Leaves Introduction Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct. The purpose of this experiment is to see how different concentrations of carbon dioxide affect the rate of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. I hypothesize that the greater

Column Chromatography of Plant Pigments Paul Ibarbia‚ Gene Paolo Jasmin‚ Gianpaolo Jimenez and Lorenzo Labicane* Department of Biology‚ University of Santo Tomas‚ Manila‚ Philippines Abstract Column chromatography of plant pigments is the separation of plant pigments extracted from Capsicum frutescens (siling labuyo). No slurry is prepared of the eluent; eluent with the stationary phase is set and then carefully poured into the column. The eluent are the solvents which are responsible for the

Community Outreach & Education Program CHROMATOGRAPHY (Adapted from: Forensic Science Activities. University of Colorado Boulder Hughes Initiative. .) DESCRIPTION: Students will use paper chromatography to separate ink molecules and identify the pen used on an unknown sample of handwriting. Students will graph and analyze data they collect using paper chromatography. PURPOSE/GOAL: Students will be able to: • Gain understanding of the purpose of chromatography. • Measure and graph pigment separation

Chromatography is a process used to separate mixtures. The word chromatography is derived from the Greek words ‘khroma’ and ‘graphein’ meaning ‘color’ and ‘to write’ or to represent. Although there are a couple different types of chromatography‚ in each case a substance is placed onto or into a medium and a solvent is passed through the test substance. In chromatography science‚ the solvent is called the mobile phase or the carrier fluid and the medium is called the stationary phase. There are four

In this lab‚ we extracted spinach pigments‚ and analyzed what colors of light these pigments absorb. By using TLC plate‚ hexane and acetone‚ I separated the pigments of spinach‚ and discovered that the main pigments were green and yellow. This works because with different polarities‚ pigments move at different rates. Hexane and acetone were also used to separate chlorophyll and carotene from spinach. Since they are polar‚ they can separate organic and inorganic things. From the experiment‚ I know

Candy chromatography is a method of analysis of separating and comparing of dyes used in candies and food coloring. It is also a proven method to analyze candy and its complex mixture‚ without having to taste it. These complex mixtures can be separated back into pure substances. To find out the ingredients of a favorite candy‚ chromatography would help to define every ingredient found in the candy sample. The word chromatography is derived from the two Greek words‚ "chroma" meaning color
