One literary element that was evident in the poem was symbols. One symbol is clear in the very opening line “Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?” (1-2) this

George Orwell uses tone and diction in his book to mold the scene of 1984 into a gloomy‚ dark and depressing set. He begins with setting the time of day‚ thirteen. Choosing "thirteen" instead of one Orwell sets a tone of an over militarized nation. He then moves on to using "boiled cabbage and old rag mats"; an all-enveloping‚ oppressive smell one couldn’t wish on even on their worst enemy. The combination of these two along with the babbling telescreen‚ snooping police‚ and contrived posters anchor

Another example would be the word “invert” (Martel)

In her poem “Circe‚ After his Departure‚” Sewell’s diction characterizes Circe’s desire as a feeling that occurs internally rather than directly relating to Odysseus. Several of Sewell’s specific word choices repudiate the concept that Circe is passionately yearning for Odysseus. Annie Proulx’s language and diction in the story is interesting. Instead of writing in complete sentences shes writes small phrases. Although the phrases and random words may sound confusing and out of place I think that they give a much more clear representation of the setting and the story. Instead of using long word sentences Proulx uses specific words that stand out in the reader’s mind. It helps the reader picture everything easily and she really gets the point across with one concise and powerful
