Catalase Lab Introduction: Catalase is an enzyme normally found in many plant and animal tissues. Its purpose is to destroy toxic substances which may be introduced into cells. Also‚ some cells use catalase to destroy cellular debris or worn out organelles. In this lab‚ we will use a catalase solution from potatoes and determine the effect of temperature and pH on the action of this enzyme. The substrate of the enzyme will be 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Catalase works by the following mechanism:

Enzymes are biological catalysts‚ large protein proteins that have a very specific three-dimensional shape which makes them highly specific and only work on one or a few similar chemical reactions. Enzymes themselves are not consumed in the reaction‚ but they help attract substrates into correct position to undergo chemical reaction. Enzymes greatly speed up the rate of biological reactions by lowering the energy of activation. To get a sense of the speed and efficiency of enzymes‚ substrates can

Action of enzymes as catalysts in biochemical processes * Enzymes acts as catalyst and increase the rate of all the chemical reactions. * Enzymes are also described by two properties like all other catalysts. It composed of two main functions. * The first function is that‚ they increase the rate of chemical reactions by without consumed themselves or undergo any change or alteration in the reaction. . ( Zemitec et‚al 2008). * The second function is‚ they increase reaction rates without

Examples of extreme environments on Earth are hot geysers and oceanic thermal vents‚ Antarctic sea ice‚ and oxygen-depleted rivers and lakes. Organisms that have evolved special adaptations that permit them to live in extreme conditions are called "extremophiles." Hypothesis: If pH is increased or decreased past the enzyme’s optimum pH‚ the number of products produced by the enzyme will decrease because the enzyme will become denatured. Variables: The Independent variable is the pH of the environment. The uncertainty of pH is ± 1. pH is a unitless value. The Dependent variable is the number of products produced. The uncertainty of this this measurement is ± 1 product. In order for this experiment to be controlled‚ many variable were identified and held constant

Activity of the Enzyme Catalase in breaking down Hydrogen Peroxide and the effect of various factors on Enzyme Activity Introduction The enzyme catalase is present in cells in order to speed the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)‚ which is a toxic chemical to the human body. When hydrogen peroxide is broken down‚ the end products are Water (H2O) and Oxygen (O2). In this report‚ the reaction of catalase to hydrogen peroxide is being tested. Furthermore‚ the effects of temperature‚ concentration

Enzyme lab report. Introduction. An enzyme is a protein molecule that speeds up the rates of chemical reactions by many folds. They recognize‚ bind‚ and change specific reactants. They do not change thus can catalyze the same reaction again and again. Activation energy also known as an energy barrier is the amount of energy needed in order to begin a chemical reaction. Catecholase catalyzes the reaction rate of catechol oxidation. Catechol is found beneath the skin of many plants such

The effect temperature has on the activity of the enzyme α- amylase. Introduction Enzymes are a biological catalysts‚ which means that they speed up the chemical reactions in living organisms. Almost all of enzymes are energized protein molecules that catalyse and regulate nearly all biochemical reactions that occur within the human body. The reason in which enzymes are sensitive to heat‚ pH and heavy metal ions is because they are made up of proteins. The food we eat is turned into energy by enzymes

FUNCTIONS OF ENZYMES Enzymes are extremely important to the human body and its ability to function. An enzyme itself is a protein made by the body’s cells to act as catalyst‚ speeding up chemical reactions in the cell. It does this by taking the reactants‚ or the elements or compounds that enter into the chemical reaction‚ in this situation referred to as substrates‚ and breaking apart their bonds so that new ones can form. The three types of enzymes are digestive enzymes‚ food enzymes‚ and metabolic
