Synopses One: Character – Old man from the ‘Bush Undertaker’ For the first entry in this reading journal‚ I chose to talk about the Old Man from Henry Lawson’s Bush Undertaker. Initially‚ the Old Man piqued my interest because he seems like the typical representation of a historical Aussie battler and consists of many of the cultural attitudes most commonly attributed to Australians. After all‚ he is an aging shepherd making a living on his own except for his loyal canine companion‚ Five Bob. However

Beyond the color scheme‚ subjects of the painting‚ also‚ are clear representations of what modern art is. The two female figures fall

The Barn Burning discussion changed a lot about what I thought about the story especially on the motives of the father. I think this was mostly because I didn’t fully understand the story when I read it for the first time. So in hearing the discussion‚ I can really see the connection between the class system and the bitterness the father felt for his lot in life that I changed how I felt about his motives. I still think there may be an element of guilt to it but it’s all wrapped up in a kind of PTSD

Barn Burning "You’re getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain’t going to have any blood to stick to you." This quote from William Faulkner’s "Barn Burning" does reveal a central issue in the story‚ as Jane Hiles suggests in her interpretation. The story is about blood ties‚ but more specifically‚ how these ties affect Sarty (the central character of the story). The story examines the internal conflict and dilemma that Sarty
