Penicillin V is a first-generation penicillin used to treat infections generally caused by gram-positive bacteria. Penicillin V consists of 16 carbons‚ 18 hydrogens‚ two nitrogen‚ five oxygens and a sulfur atom. The beta-lactam group is the ring composed of two nitrogen‚ a sulfur atom‚ and an oxygen double-bound to a carbon. Penicillin works by bursting a bacteria’s cell wall; this is done by inhibiting the proteins that link peptidoglycans together in the cell wall‚ which prevents the bacteria from

The tube that contained my unknown material was tube number twenty. I did a gram stain‚ oxidase test‚ and used three different medias to narrow down and identify my unknown organism. The first step I took in identifying was a gram stain. This gram stain would reveal whether my organism is gram positive or gram negative which would narrow my choices from fifteen options down to six. After completing the gram stain‚ my unknown was the color pink. This revealed my unknown as being gram negative.

Angeline Veth Period 1 A.P Biology Introduction: How can the process of transformation effect bacteria cells? -Our independent variable were Plasmids‚ the three genes on our plasmid are small and circular‚ self-replicating chromosome in bacteria. -Our dependent variable was florescent‚ ampicillin resistant bacteria. -The control was the plates were the one without plasmids which was LB/AMP/+PGLO‚ LB/AMP/-PGLO‚ LB/-PGLO. These threes represented nutrients and ampicillin‚ plasmids and arabinose

Experiment 1- Title: Observing Bacteria and Blood Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to learn how to use a compound microscope and an oil immersion lens while observing prepared bacterial slides. Additionally‚ it will be necessary to prepare slides so as to observe bacterial cultures from yogurt as well as to observe the composition of blood (i.e. red blood cells‚ white blood cells‚ and platelets). Procedure: Exercise 1: Viewing Prepared Slides To begin this lab experiment I

Inflammatory bowel disease can be divided into two subgroups: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s disease part of inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn’s disease can occur anywhere from the mouth to anus. Ulcerative colitis can be just in the colon and the rectum. In this research paper‚ there will be demonstration of Crohn’s disease and who gets the disease. Also‚ there will be demonstration of the symptoms‚ the age groups of people who have the disease. There are many people who have Crohn’s

Olivia Teasdale Mrs. Gaspar SBI3U1 10/07/13 The Effect of Disinfectants and Antiseptics on Bacteria Growth Abstract The purpose of this lab was to determine the effect of disinfectants and antiseptics on bacterial growth. By observing the effects of 5 different inhibitors including alcohol‚ bleach‚ soap solution and distilled water‚ it was determined what antiseptic or disinfectant was able to best inhibit this kind of bacterial growth. Nutrient Agar was poured into a Petri dish with four quadrants

In past decades when someone said‚ “you are what you eat” a person was able to respond quite easily. Unfortunately in recent years it has become harder and harder to answer truthfully due to the growth of the factory farming industry. The average american is completely oblivious to what exactly the meat and animal products they consume contains. In 2012‚ the average American consumed 71.2 pounds of red meat and 54.1 pounds of poultry ‚ according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). (Wall

Proteus mirabilis is a small gram-negative bacteria bacilli and a facultative anaerobe. A facultative anaerobe is when an organism can live in the absence or presence of oxygen. It is also a prokaryote‚ a single celled organism lacking a cell membrane bound nucleus‚ and can be divided into bacteria and archaea. Proteus mirabilis is characterized by their motility‚ its ability to distinguish maltose‚ and its inability to distinguish lactose. Proteus has the ability to stretch itself out and secrete

In the first experiment to investigate how E. coli survives in food‚ bacterial growth significantly differed between my group’s nutrient agar and MAC agar plates. In courgette‚ there was moderate growth in nutrient agar while it was heavy in Mac agar. In beef broth‚ there was slight growth in nutrient agar while it was negative in MAC agar. In fresh basil‚ growth was heavy in nutrient agar while it was heavy in MAC agar. Where cottage cheese was the ingredient‚ both plates had heavy growth. For walnut
