Enzyme Catalysis Abstract: Catalysis is an enzyme that decomposes hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. In this lab we will conduct a series of experiments to determine the affects of; pH‚ temperature‚ and concentration change on such catalysis. After completing the experiments we determined that catalase works most efficiently when in a 27°c‚ 50% (5 ml of catalase – 5ml of water)‚ and a normal body pH of 7°. Title : THE EFFECT OF PH ON THE ACTIVITY OF CATALASE Aim : To study the effect of pH on the activity of catalase. Introduction : Catalase‚ an enzyme found in many different tissues‚ catalyses the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. 2 H202 → 2H20 + O2 Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic substance that can be formed during aerobic respiration and catalase removes this product. The activity of catalase can be measured by finding the rate of oxygen release from hydrogen peroxide

Factors Affecting Enzymes The activity of an Enzyme is affected by its environmental conditions. Changing these alter the rate of reaction caused by the enzyme. In nature‚ organisms adjust the conditions of their enzymes to produce an Optimum rate of reaction‚ where necessary‚ or they may have enzymes which adapted to function well in extreme conditions where they live.Increasing temperature increases the Kinetic Energy. In a fluid‚ this means that there are more random collisions between molecules
Premium Enzyme PH
Introduction Enzymes are proteins produced by living organisms to speed up the rate in which chemical reactions occur. This process can happen fast‚ slowly‚ or stop the chemical reaction all together depending on the temperature‚ pH and concentration. Catalase is one of the most common enzymes. It is found in living organisms and is used to break down hydrogen peroxide. This must happen because hydrogen peroxide is considered toxic to cells in the body. However‚ when catalase is used it breaks

The pH Scale is a scale made to show how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH of something is measured with pH paper which can vary from wide range paper‚ which covers all ph’s‚ but is not as accurate at some others. There are pH papers that get very specific that can have a range such as 2 or 3 and get much more precise. The neutral on the scale is 7. Anything that is below 7 is considered acidic and anything above 7 is considered alkaline. Acidic substances contain more H+ than OH-. H+

Procedures for Part A: For Activity A‚ we first tested enzyme activity. First‚ we used an H2O2 syringe to transfer 10 mL of H2O2 into an unlabeled 60-mL cup. Then‚ we used a transfer pipet to add one mL of catalase solution into the unlabeled 60-mL cup that we put H2O2 in. After that‚ we observed the solution for one minute. Then we tested the effect of boiling on enzyme activity. First we used a transfer pipet to transfer 4 mL of catalase into a test tube. After that‚ we placed the test tube filled

The Effect of pH on the Rate of Osmosis Using a Glucose Solution Melissa Werderitch Biology 157 11/6/06 Introduction In a journal article written by Florian Lang‚ osmosis is essentially explained as the flow of water from one area to another that are separated by a selectively permeable membrane to equalize concentrations of particles in the two locations (Lang‚ 1997). Osmosis is able to maintain osmotic pressure and regulate a cell’s volume. In a hypotonic () or hypertonic () environment

Enzyme Kinetics Marcos‚ Nelissa S. Institute of Chemistry‚ University of the Philippines‚ Diliman‚ Quezon City 1101 Philippines ABSTRACT The rationale of the experiment is basically founded in the concept of reaction rates as affected by enzyme‚ and how the enzyme works is competed by a competitive inhibitor‚ thereby impeding the forward reaction. In this experiment‚ o-diphenol oxidase‚ an enzyme that causes the browning in fruits‚ was extracted from banana and reaction rate of this was established

Psychology of Human Relations Stanford Prison Experiment Reaction Essay Jana Haight March 1‚ 2011 The Stanford Prison Experiment was to study of the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by Psychology professor Philip Zimbardo at Stanford University in August 1971. Twenty-four students were selected after tests and background checks deemed them mentally healthy
