Microbiology UNKNOWN LAB REPORT Kateryna Petrakova INTRODUCTION Microorganisms cause a great amount of diseases. For healthcare providers it is very important to be aware of what organisms are pathogenic and cause a disease and‚ therefore‚ to find an appropriate treatment. Different microorganisms require various environments in order to replicate and to become dangerous for a person’s health. An integral part of any medical treatment is to be able to recognize and

Gram Staining Introduction Prokaryotes are a large group of organisms with no membrane bound organelles. They consist of two domains: Archaea and Bacteria. These organisms are only found in extreme environments such as volcanoes. Prokaryotes are still being researched and are a very diverse group. In this lab we focused on trying to identify if the bacteria found had a lot of peptidoglycan by gram staining. Testing this could be done by using a Petri dish full of agar and testing different bacteria

Part B: Gram Stain Preparation: Watch the following video: The Gram Stain (4:15 minutes) Procedure: Include the answers to the questions below in your lab report. Lab Questions: This procedure is used to separate what two types of bacteria? This separation is based on differences in what physical trait? What is the iodine used for in this staining technique? Why is it important to heat fix the bacteria prior to the staining procedure? If you had a bacteria sample that you knew to be gram positive

Introduction: The gram stain is one of several laboratory procedures that can be used to narrow down the identities of unknown bacteria. Bacteria have three different shapes; cocci‚ bacilli‚ and spirilla. Since bacteria pretty much have the same reflective index as water‚ a bacteria cell must be dyed so that these shapes can be seen. Materials: Petri dish Dropper Cleansing solution Slides Bibulous paper Inoculation loop Crystal violet dye‚ Iodine Acetone Safranin Water from the sink

What Is Microbiology? Microbiology is the study (logy) of very small (micro) living (bio) things. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms. These "bugs" include: bacteria (that’s the Latin plural for bacterium); viruses (that’s the non-Latin plural for virus - virii sounds weird‚ so I don’t say it); and‚ fungi (that’s the Latin plural for fungus - which by now you have guessed‚ or already knew‚ and may not be all that interested to know‚ anyway). Microbiology is actually made up of several

Unknown Report Emily Juhl Section – 3 April 15‚ 2013 Unknown #8 Family: Enterobacteriaceae Genus: Serratia Species: Marcescens Abstract Microorganisms are constantly finding ways to resists to antibiotics. For this reason‚ it is important to test and observe unknown organisms in the lab to continually improve the health and well being of society. The objective of this report was to first isolate a single colony of an unknown culture on a LB agar plate. From

the product can be stained with the gram staining. Gram staining is the method of differentiating bacteria into 2 large groups of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria based on their cell wall. Most of the bacteria or yeast in the starter cultures used are Gram-positive. Gram staining requires 4 types of solutions used in the procedure: crystal violet‚ mordant‚ alcohol and safranin. The Gram-positive microbes will have blue stain while Gram-negative stains pink after the procedure. Methylene

Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann was a German microbiologist whose 1882 experiment measured the effects of different colors of light on photosynthetic activity and showed that the conversion of light energy to chemical energy took place in the chloroplast. In 1881‚ he observed the movement of bacteria towards the chloroplasts in a strand of “Spirogyra” algae. Engelmann hypothesized that the bacteria were moving in response to oxygen generated by the photo synthetically active chloroplasts in the algae.
