DNA Aim This practical procedure allows you to amplify a 460 basepair fragment of DNA from within the control region of the mitochondrial genome. This can be done using three water baths or‚ if one is available‚ a thermal cycler (PCR machine). After it has been amplified‚ the DNA is run on an electrophoresis gel. Note: This method has been adapted from one developed by the Dolan DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. More details are available from the DNA Learning Center’s

| IDENTIFICATION OF SOME MACROMOLECULES | | INTRODUCTION Dehydration-synthesis is a reaction that occurs to form different types of macromolecules. It is a reaction that leaves a macromolecule structure along the lines of developing its own specific function in a living organism. The 4 most common ones are carbohydrates which includes monosaccharides and polysaccharides‚ lipids‚ proteins and nucleic acids (Mack 2012). Scientists identify different types of macromolecules to achieve

unknown compound with a known compound because similar compounds will display similar characteristics. In this experiment‚ identifications of the unknown ketone was accomplished using thin layer chromatography‚ melting point‚ and NMR spectrometry. Thin layer chromatography is very quick but sensitive way of determining the components of a mixture or a specific compound from a list of knowns. This method is the one which was utilized in the following experiment. When comparing a sample of known

Once the aspirin is prepared‚ it is isolated from the reaction solution and then it is purified. The aspirin is insoluble in cold water‚ and it is isolated by filtering the chilled reaction solution. Purification is essential to remove any unreacted salicylic acid and acetic anhydride as well as the acetic acid product and phosphoric acid. Acetic anhydride is caused to decompose by the addition of water once the formation of aspirin is complete. C4H6O3 (Acetic anhydride) + H2O (Water) ------------------------->

synthase‚ a special enzyme that helps the oxygen found in hemoglobin make its way into body tissue. High altitude also triggers an increase in our heartbeat‚ breathing and urination. The low humidity and low air pressure at high altitudes causes moisture from our skin and lungs to evaporate at a faster pace and our body’s increased exertion requires even more water to keep it hydrated. Besides that‚ less of oxygen also can cause a cluster of symptoms called altitude sickness. People living at or visiting

Experiment 2 – Identification of Inorganic Solids Jesse Galina CHM 101 Lab Monday October 1‚ 2012 Unknown Solid – 2 Identifying my cation was rather easy because of the color of the powder when it was first given to me. It was pinkish/slight red when solid and when it was grounded up even further. This observation ruled out every cation except for some hydrated Co (II) salts. After being dissolved in water‚ the solution turned pink which agrees with the statement that the cation was Co
