placed on us through the media. Growing up we are unconsciously receiving rules and expectations on how we need to act‚ speak‚ and look. Both men and women are told to act and feel a certain way. Jack Katz allowed to see how much men are hindered by these unsaid rules. Watching Jack Katz film‚ Tough Guise‚ taught me so much of what men have to struggle with every day. After watching Tough Guise I immediately wanted to pick the subject of men and women’s change of image from 50 years ago to todays images. I never really took a good look at male action figures and how they have added an overwhelming amount of muscle to the character. However‚ I do not feel that the change in muscle tone from athletes or super heroes are done just for image sake. There has been man advances in muscle growth and athletes today have an extreme advantage over athletes 50 years ago.

Christina Remuck SOC 212 March 4‚ 2009 Reflection Essay 1 “Tough GuiseTough Guise is the first film I have ever viewed that made me realize how bias this world is regarding men. At one point in the video he discusses how the dominant group of white heterosexual men is not identified as one of the traits of violent people. He compares this to how we in the United States think of race‚ how the word conjures

thinking about class‚ race‚ and gender? The primary way Tough Guise gets us to think about class‚ race‚ and gender is by showing how the media presents them. It was shown that when someone says class it is assumed low class‚ when race is brought up minorities are assumed‚ and gender typically warrants the idea of a female. This shows that everything is presented through the idea of a majority viewing a minority. The most striking way Tough Guise brings up the topic of gender is the lack thereof in reporting

The film “Tough Guise 2” was very eye opening. I’ve always been aware of the stereotypes men are expected to uphold‚ but Jackson Katz put this into a whole new perspective for me. By showing me videos from years ago to our date today‚ I’ve learned this is a reoccurring problem that isn’t new‚ men have been acting in a violent manner for ages. The overwhelming statistic of crimes created by men are shocking to me. Over ninety percent of men create violent crimes‚ leaving the other ten percent to women
