The Joule-Kelvin effect - the expansion of a real gas This famous experiment performed in 1852 was a follow-up to those of Gay-Lussac (1807) and Joule (1845) and demonstrated that there were indeed attractive forces acting between gas molecules. In theory‚ if attractive forces do exist then when a gas expands its temperature should drop. The potential energy of the gas molecules has been increased and therefore in an isolated system its kinetic energy‚ and thus its temperature‚ should fall.

William Thomson‚ 1st Baron Kelvin OM‚ GCVO‚ PC‚ PRS‚ PRSE (/ˈkɛlvɪn/; 26 June 1824 – 17 December 1907)‚ was an Irish and British mathematical physicist and engineerwho was born in Belfast in 1824. At the University of Glasgow he did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics‚ and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form. He worked closely with mathematics professor Hugh Blackburn in his work

students from different parts of the world. Therefore 20 QUTIC students will be referenced as convenience sampling. Everyone of them will be asked to finish a paper-based questionnaire with 1 open search and 9 closed search questions‚ at P block‚ Kelvin Grove Campus in 8 April 2013. All responses will be voluntary and anonymous. The primary data will be analyzed and then showed in a graphic form. Scholarly journals and dissertations will be referenced as a kind of mainly secondary data. The report

JAMES PRESCOTT JOULE James Prescott Joule was one of the most famous physicists in England in the 17th Century. On the 24th day of December 1818‚ Joule was born near Manchester‚ England in a wealthy business-owning family with five children. As a child‚ he suffered from a spinal disorder which caused him to become shy and weak. Unlike those of his age‚ he preferred to stay indoors and learn‚ instead of playing in the field. As expected by his parents‚ James and his brother were to inherit the

EQUIVALENCE OF THE KELVIN-PLANK AND CLAUSIUS STATEMENTS Two statements are said to be equivalent if the truth statement implies the trust of the other‚ and vacation of one statement implies the violation of other. Thus‚ there could be two methods to show the equivalence. Method 1: Violation of Kelvin-Plank statement by violating Clausius statement: From Fig. (2.4.9) (a) let us assume that a heat pump receives heat Q2 from low temperature reservoir at T2 and supplies it to high temperature

not pass from a body at low temperature to one at high temperature without an accompanying change elsewhere’’ and Kelvin that ‘’No cyclic process is possible in which heat is taken from a hot source and converted completely into work’’. The aim of this essay is to prove if there equivalence between these two statements and it will be achieved by analysing them. (Nag‚2008) The Kelvin statement of the second law of thermodynamics considers that is impossible to be constructed a cyclically operating

Kelvin defines what it is to be a person who quits at life but is still capable of doing good. He is often chastised by Jess as a loser who relies on the good will of the government and friends to survive. It is true‚ Kelvin even looks like a loser with his dress and personality often following the “bum” stereotype. This serves as a catalyst for Jess who does not want to see herself in the same situation as Kelvin. Kelvin was more than just a loser though‚ he
