Is language an instinct? Before discussing this question‚ the definition or area of language should be considered first. Many introductions to the study of language‚ linguistics‚ avoid giving a definition‚ or consider it to be so obvious that it does not need to be defined (Harley‚ 1995). According to Gleason and Ratner (1998)‚ one of the properties attributed to language is that it is a uniquely human behaviour. Pinker (1994:334) points out that: nonhuman communication systems are based

Within the two short stories One Intoxicating Evening of Spring Breeze‚ and Love and Bread‚ the emotion of love is carefully scrutinized. However opposite these stories seem to be‚ they both have some things in common. In One Intoxicating Evening of Spring Breeze‚ love is taken to be not nearly as important as financial stability‚ and in Love and Bread‚ love is perceived as something that conquers all. In One Intoxicating Evening of Spring Breeze‚ the narrator is a desperately poor man living

prepared me to see my mum look back while my dad didn’t. The moment was engraved in my memory and I suddenly realized that there exist differences between the same unconditional loves. As the proverb goes‚ mother love is water-like while father love is mountain-like. In terms ofdaily caring‚ it is undeniable that mother’s love is far more sensitive than father’s. In my case it is obvious in the content of their caring behavior. When I still lived at home before college‚ I even can’t imagine how she

1) The universal them I believe was that all the children were developing and being children. The environment and the way they were taken care of had an effect on their upbringing but ultimately all the children were able to develop gross motor skills. For the Love of Poetry As once said by prominent activist Helen Keller‚ “the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart.” One of the few things that can’t be touched but experienced with the heart is poetry. Just as poetry is embraced on a more powerful level with the heart‚ so is the universal concept of love. And although love can come in a combination of ways whether it be between a child and a mother‚ an old withered couple

theories of language development that try to explain how a child learns a language and how issues can appear‚ slowing or inhibiting that development. The first is the Behaviorist Perspective. This theory states that children develop their language skills through operant conditioning. As they attempt to speak and make sounds that resemble words‚ they are rewarded with praise. Some behaviourists believe that children imitate words and are rewarded for doing so‚ thus leading to their language development

any language means a contraction‚ reduction and impoverishment of the sum total of the reservoir of human thought and knowledge as expressible through language. To what extent do you agree with this? As globalization takes place‚ languages spoken by the majority became lingua franca of different regions. English for example as its most widely spread across the entire world‚ is spoken by 360 to 400 million as their first language and 470 million to more than 1 billion as their second language. It

The poems I chose‚ “Havisham” and "Love After Love"‚ are comparable‚ with their common subject of how a person responds to the end of a relationship‚ but they are very contrasting in the paths they take. The persona in “Love After Love” talks about returning to yourself and loving who you are: without the need for someone else‚ “You will love again the stranger who was yourself” as if you lose yourself in a relationship so much that you need to learn how to look after yourself again. Whereas “Havisham”
