interrelationships among the organisms and the environment‚ and we are closer to an actual understanding of this ecosystem. Here we will be studying the biotic and abiotic components of two major freshwater ecosystems we’ve visited- the Ampang lake and the Gombak river. Biotic factors consist of the living things that shape an ecosystem (Library.thinkquest.org). After examining the lake and river ecosystems‚ we only found two similar biotic components‚ which are the stonefly larvae (Plecoptera) and fish.

STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONALISM: IT’S ROLE IN COMMUNICATION Structural functionalism is a broad perspective in sociology and anthropology which sets out to interpret society as a structure with interrelated parts. Functionalism addresses society as a whole in terms of the function of its constituent elements; namely norms‚ customs‚ traditions and institutions. procured from Easton’s system’s theory. He applied a similar typology in his ‘structural functionalism’. Easton and other comparative political scientists put forward a new formulation‚ utilizing the political system as a base and turning to a set of concept related to structure and function. In ecology‚ the competitive exclusion principle‚ sometimes referred to as Gause’s law of competitive exclusion or just Gause’s law‚ is a proposition which states that two species competing for the same resources cannot coexist if other ecological factors are the same. When one species has even the slightest advantage or edge over another‚ then the one with the advantage will dominate in the long term. One of the two competitors will always overcome the other‚ leading to either the extinction

Basis of the structural functionalist perspective A society is a complex unit‚ made up of interrelated parts. All these parts form the structure of the society and each sub unit has to perform its given task. Social structures are stressed and placed at the center of analysis and social functions are deduced from these structures. This perspective looks at how the various parts of the society come together and perform their individual tasks interdependently and interrelated to promote social stability
