    In the “Story of an Hour” the ultimate cause of Mrs. Mallard’s death is a heart attack from seeing her husband alive. The phrase “a joy that kills” is debated to have different meanings. One meaning of this phrase relating to this story is that Mrs. Mallard was so sad from her husband’s death that once she saw he was well she was filled with happiness that the shock cause for her to get heart attack and die of pure happiness.
