22 November 2013 Further Issues in Using OLS with Time Series Data • Last time‚ we discussed the assumptions necessary for OLS parameter estimates to be consistent in a time series context. • We also compared these assumptions with the assumptions necessary for OLS to be unbiased. • In general‚ the conditions are more restrictive for OLS to be unbiased than for OLS to be consistent‚ so in a time series context‚ it is fairly frequent to have OLS be biased but still consistent. reasoning.) 1. Assume we have a simple linear regression model: . Given a random sample from the population‚ which of the following statement is true? a. OLS estimators are biased when BMI do not vary much in the sample. b. OLS estimators are biased when the sample size is small (say 20 observations). c. OLS estimators are biased when the error u captures perseverance and self‐ control‚ and you believe that people who are perseverant and have more self‐ control are less likely overweight

ECON2206 Revision Notes W2 – SIMPLE REGRESSION MODEL MOTIVATION Much of applied econometric analysis are interested in “explaining y in terms of x” and confront three issues: 1) Since there is never an exact relationship between y and x‚ how do we account for the “other unobserved” variables? 2) What
