Philip Malan was born in Stellenbosch in 1987. He was exposed to music by his mother‚ who is a music teacher and lecturer‚ and his father who also plays the piano. He started playing the guitar at the age of 9 when his mother handed him her old guitar and taught him a few basic chords. He played without an official teacher for four years until he started lessons with Graham Pringle at the age of 13.
